Epic Welcomes Blockchain Games [Oct 16, 2021, 11:49 am ET] – Share – Viewing Comments
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney takes the opportunity presented by
the indication that
Steam may ban games based on blockchain technology to announce that the Epic
Games Store will not. In a
couple
of tweets he outlines this stance, saying games still must comply with the
law:
Epic Games Store will welcome games that make use of blockchain tech provided they follow the relevant laws, disclose their terms, and are age-rated by an appropriate group. Though Epic's not using crypto in our games, we welcome innovation in the areas of technology and finance.
As a technology, the blockchain is just a distributed transactional database with a decentralized business model that incentivize investment in hardware to expand the database's capacity. This has utility whether or not a particular use of it succeeds or fails.

Money is probably part of it, but the other part of it is minimizing gambling exposure(specifically gambling that results in real currency, they seem to be fine as long as it doesn't exist the ecosystem). Valve doesn't want to fall on the wrong side of regulators. The gravytrain isn't going to stop because they ban NFTs, but regulators clamping down is another story

The fact that the use of BlockChain is an environmental nonsense should be enough to delegitimize it. The fact that Sweeney endorses this environmental nonsense doesn't delegitimize it more, it only delegitimize Sweeney more. What utility does it have exactly ? That it incentivizes investment in hardware ? We can't get a bloody GPU at a decent price to play games already . Wants to push it further ? Maybe he wants to incentivize indie retro gaming? I am personally not looking forward to witnessing digital decline accelerate just because of a few morons who are bathing in their banknotes and sending cars onto the orbit.

I wonder if Epic truly understands what they are getting themselves into, and in case not, they should refer to the RIAA v. Napster case. "Napster was liable for contributory or vicarious copyright violations because it was allowing millions of users to download music for free." Now change "allowing millions of users to download music to free" to "allowing criminals to use crypto games to commit money laundering and other illegal activities." Epic, as the store hosting and selling these games, could be held liable as a facilitator.

I'm not a fan of cryptocurrency or NFTs, but I see no problem with allowing those things to fail on their own (or perhaps, even find a long term nitch; though I remain skeptical that they will survive another 10 years). I don't think it should be up to a store front to dictate what technology should be used to manage transactions within a game ecosystem.

As someone else mentioned, the wording of Valve's new rule (so new it seems they haven't yet updated every instance of the listing on their site) prohibits the exchange of crypto or NFTs in games, not simply the use of a blockchain. The main gimmick of the title in question is that you earn NFTs for completing tasks in-game.
On a related note, holy shit are there a lot of bots on Twitter spamming for another small-time, apparently more NFT-friendly game platform...
