Steam Reportedly Banning Crypto Games

A tweet from Age of Rust states the developers of this first-person adventure game have been informed by Valve that its game and other that use NFTs or other blockchain technology will be kicked off Steam. The post includes an image of the section of the Steam Rules and Guidelines covering the situation. Included on the list of items you should not post on Steam is: "Applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs." NME reports asking Valve for a comment about this, but have not heard back yet.

I'd agree many cryptos are straight up scams, there are dozens if not hundreds of them out there. You seem be saying no crypto is an actual currency. I think it is clear that's not the case. Now it might be true they will fail, that doesn't mean they were never currency. There are plenty of failed fiat currencies throughout history. Were Dutch tulip bulbs currency? They failed spectacularly, but there is little doubt they were used as currency. All that said -- don't get me wrong, I have no current plans to invest in any crypto.

Edit: I would also agree the electricity usage of current cryptos is a major issue. However, that doesn't keep them from being a currency, just makes them a bad one.

Cryptocurrency isn't a new disease that has to be eradicated or we're all doomed.

You have clearly no idea what you're talking about, according to projections it should have a bigger impact than the internet and information technologies combined had.

For that to happen massive amounts of energy, the likes of which humanity has never seen, will need to be wasted and ungodly amounts of CO2 released in the atmosphere. Crypto mining's CO2 and energy consumption are following an EXPONENTIAL curve at an alarming rate.

How alarming a rate? Bitcoin alone used 9.59 TWh in February 2017 ( source: https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption ), a bit more than 4 years later it uses 175 TWh. Its corresponding CO2 generation followed the same trend. That's a ~2 times increase per year... At this rate ( and the way the algorithm works, there's no reason to believe it could ever slow down, it was built like this by design, call it Satoshi's "oops, I fucked the world" to make billions Ponzi moment ), it'll consume the equivalent of the current energy consumption of everything on the planet combined ( 23 398 TWh, source: https://www.statista.com/topics/6462/global-electricity/ ) somewhere in 2028.

Let that sink in.

If you believe for one second that crypto isn't the current/future main threat to life on Earth, you haven't been following what has been happening for the last 10 years and/or you have a lack of comprehension of basic maths, especially exponential functions.

On the subject of money being real, I give you: Money: The True Story of a Made-Up Thing

The value of any currency whether it be US dollars or Dutch tulip bulbs, is completely based on the population's belief and trust in the currency to hold its "value".

As I have said before and still believe -- someday there will be a completely digital currency which is safe, stable, easy to use, and widely accepted. Will Bitcoin be that currency? I have absolutely no idea. I wouldn't even care to guess when that day might arrive. It might happen before I die, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

Yes, money today is fiat because precious metals like gold and silver do not back it. However, governmental institutions print and regulate money, creating a situation where a nation and its economy establishes money's intrinsic value. Further, it is also heavily regulated to ensure inflation doesn't run out of control or suddenly spike overnight, and there are laws in place to prevent currency crimes. Cryptocurrency has no such support or backing, or rules. It is worse than fiat currency; it is total anarchy and an intangible asset.

OH NO , we have one of You people here--LMAO!

Beat me to it... As if wanting the specie to survive instead of mining virtual currency that has no real value other than the ponzi scheme its value is built on and adds no productive value whatsoever to anything other than itself is somehow... radical.

Imagine that.
Seems to me that our species has done a pretty good job ruining the planet before cryptocurrency.

Now, most societies are obsessed with commerce, capitalism, and consumption... as if currency is the ONLY thing of value. America has been showing the world how to do it for over 100 years.

Cryptocurrency isn't a new disease that has to be eradicated or we're all doomed. It's a symptom of our diseased culture. The most influential members of society have a LONG rap sheet of exploiting the environment and fellow man, all to accumulate more wealth and money. Perpetually hurdling us towards doom, where they will die rich, and we will die poor.

From my perspective, Bitcoin is as real as any fiat currency, in that, it's all just made up anyways. I saw this (maybe) Bob Marley quote, seems fitting to repeat it here: "Money is numbers, and numbers never end. If it takes money to be happy, your search for happiness will never end."

I mean...he ain't wrong. Crypto farms in some countries are using up more electricity than whole cities. Just Bitcoin mining used more electricity than the entire country of Switzerland, which has almost 9 million people, and how many crypto currencies are there, now? Thousands, with more showing up every week.

I guess....

Your scenario assumes there is a mechanism to convert real cash into NFTs in the game and then to convert them into cash. One half of that certainly exists elsewhere. You can buy in game items, PLEX in EVE On-line comes to mind. But there is no mechanism to convert PLEX back into cash. Also I know there are third party markets for some games items where people sell in game items for cash, I guess they could use that. They could even sell common items back and forth. Maybe that would work... while savvy criminals exist they don't seem common -- more often they are flat out stupid. Then again, maybe that's a misperception -- perhaps it is just that the savvy ones aren't caught as much as the stupid ones. All that said, I still don't see criminals trusting games to transfer large amounts of currency. Small purchases, perhaps.

Valve is already running a racket with its healthy cut on the Steam store sales, loot boxes, and peer-2-peer marketplace transactions... why risk ruining a good thing? I'm sure the previous/current exposure to money laundering is more than enough to handle, especially if the regulators are currently happy.
