How is that exactly? 'Journalists' are just as much video games fans as you or I.
Completely disagree, they need to get through each and every game as fast as possible to be able to write about it. Where as you and I don't have to play everything under the sun and can take more time learning the mechanics and subtleties of the select few games we actually enjoy. Hence why every Multiplayer review is a shallow joke from people AWFUL at the game. Games journalist now are a joke and are more concerned about politics/wokeness of a game then actual mechanics.
That's true. They are video games fans, but they don't have the time to play the games they love and be good at. I've written for a few magazines in the past, and each time I plaid an FPS against journalists at an event, it's been a massacre.

There are some exceptions. Like me, because I was a part-time journalist. But very few.

Agreed. Thought I was reading a Polygon review of Far Cry 6. Turned out to be the ravings of a fucking idiot who couldnt get over the fact the latino characters mix English with Spanish. Stereotype bla bla bla stfu and do your job you unimportant good-for-nothing.

Not sure about the cards and roguelite aspects. What do y'all think?

They did announce that they were adding a 'classic' mode, with no cards, for those who wanted a L4D2 experience.

I didn't mind the cards, but I appreciate an option not to deal with them. I'm glad to hear that the game has improved since the beta. Waiting for more real world reviews before making up my mind.

I'm surprised about these early positive reviews as well. I felt like the general consensus of the open beta was that it was the ugly, dimwit cousin of L4D.
I'm also very surprised. But to be honest, the game journalists are not the best to judge the quality of a multiplayer game. And good luck to test a multiplayer FPS before the release date.

I can picture them playing with bots, at the lowest difficulty, with a gamepad in their hands.

It feels much better to play now then the beta did that's for sure. I don't have any mechanics details for you though as I didn't dive that deep into the beta.

I'm surprised about these early positive reviews as well. I felt like the general consensus of the open beta was that it was the ugly, dimwit cousin of L4D. The beta definitely lacked a showcase of interesting special enemies. Is it that the actual full version has that special sauce poured over the simple meal that was the open beta?!

Well, it surely can't do worse than Aliens: Fireteam Elite - which also featured Challenge Cards but had no roguelite or randomization aspects to speak of. That game is moreorless already dead because developers Cold Iron clearly have no understanding of how keep a player base interested. Even the matchmaking is rubbish, so most people moved on to other games - like WWZ: Aftermath and probably also now B4B.

Reviews of B4B seem to be pretty positive but I'm on the fence about it. I played the last open beta and wasn't impressed much at all - despite being marketed as a L4D "spiritual successor", it seemed to lack that special something (sauce?) that the L4D games had. Even the playable characters themselves seemed bland and uninteresting in comparison to their predecessors.
