Out of the Blue

I finally gave up trying to use my Melitta coffee filters in my Chemex coffee maker. The drip ended up too slow, and the filters had the unfortunate tendency to break. The Chemex filters are more expensive, but work perfectly as intended, so that's money well spent. This switchover started when (another) coffee carafe broke. And while I don't have a spare carafe, I now have a Melitta cone and a bunch of filters as backup in case I break the Chemex. Besides history suggesting this will end up suffering a catastrophe at some point, as I mentioned before, the glass is lightbulb-thin, so it seems inevitable.

Filtered Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

Nope. The difference between the Melitta and Chemex cones is the Melitta cone supports the bottom of the filter and the Chemex is just open on the bottom. So the heat, hot water, and gravity work on that little seam and sometimes manage to get it to give. Folded, scored, or otherwise.
Have you thought about trying the metal reusable filters?
Yes, I've tried them. The paper filter coffee tastes a bit better. Also, I do not love the process of cleaning them out, though I suppose grounds rinsed down the drain is more environment friendly than throwing them out. One of these days maybe I'll start composting them again, but we have a very small garden.

I'd agree caution is well advised when perusing reddit. It can be a useful place though, most of the game subs I've been in can and often do provide useful information when requested.

There's far more sociopaths than psychopaths, so let hope it works on them too.
I think the problem with something like this is convincing psychopaths that they are indeed psychopaths and need medication. A psychopath thinks there's nothing wrong with them, by definition.
It's sociopaths that don't know they are sick. Psychopaths know they are out of place. Iirc, they are born without (it might be possible due to injury too, not sure) empathy.
Most do their best to fit into a society without the ability to feel empathy but can form bonds with others they know are important to them personally. I.e. like a parent.

AFAIK it's mostly semantics. Psychopaths are just violent sociopaths.

The Chemex filters

Of course my brain read that as The Chexmix filters. I love me some Chex mix. 🤤

Ok... so I wasn't the only one

So do you like boil water, throw your ground beams in the top and then just pour the water in and toss the filter? (Sorry skimmed through the website)
Yup. Chemex and Melitta use the same pour-over drip system. Filter goes in the cone, grounds go in the filter, hot water poured over the grounds drips through into the carafe, and voila! Coffee.

Something something something Chex mix. Something something something coffee!

KNOCK THAT OFF! Now I really crave a bowl of Rice Chex with sugar sprinkled over the top....

... A must read.
... Another must read.

Most don't know what Covid hospitalization entails, forget the costs, or the varying aptitude or resources of the health workers in the hospital you may get, not always choose.

Even a "slight" Covid treatment can reach waterboarding levels of suffering.

Get asked if you do want chest compressions and tubes shoved down your throat in case
you flatline (or prefer DNR, do not resuscitate).

Cpap or Bipap (stronger) machines:
Force air into your lungs, like someone doing CPR constantly hour after hour.
If oxygen levels are dire, probably you'll be days without eating, or drinking much, for the risk of aspiration.

Ventilator, intubation:
If the Bipap at 100% can't keep your oxygen high enough, the next step is a ventilator, with a tube down your throat.
Aggressive pneumonia, peril of lung scarring or collapse, possible blood clots in the legs, or chest.
Sedated on continuous Propofol, anti-anxiety drugs, and fentanyl drips.
If your body unconsciously fights the ventilator, you get also paralytics to keep your muscles from working against it, because you need to rest.

Steroids, anti-inflammatories, blood thinners, vasopressor to keep your blood pressure up. Antibiotics eventually to prevent bacterial infections, if your white blood cell count goes up.
You can get fungal invasions too.
All manner of tubes for feeding, and excreta.
Dialysis if your kidneys begin to give up under all those drugs.
If your peak oxygen pressures need to be very high this causes lung damage.
If you can't get enough oxygen, your organs begin to fail.
Meanwhile Covid is rampaging and can additionally do damage from your toes to your brain.

If you need Levophed, that's a sign that you literally need a miracle to survive.
Then phenylephrine, vasopressin, dopamine ...

Tracheostomy, or getting a hole in your throat, upper trachea, and a tube inserted :
When Covid overwhelms the capacity in ICUs, an early tracheostomy may accelerate ventilator weaning and free up critical equipment, staff, and units.

Ecmo machines, very hard to get :
Think dialysis but instead of filtering, they put oxygen in your blood so you don't need to breathe at all. Similar to the heart-lung by-pass machine used in open-heart surgery.

In all of this, there may be go forth and then backwards as they test your body risponse repeatedly taking it off the machines.

Errors in treatment can ocurr out of extreme fatigue in the overextended health personnel or because of novices inducted because of depleted numbers (burned, infected, etc).

If conscious and not too brain damaged to even wake up, you, otherwise your family will consider eventual disconnecting, better if you accepted a DNR previously.
That is, if triage is not a thing, and intervenes sooner.

Meanwhile people with heart or stroke issues, hurt drivers, or a teenager with appendicitis may need the bed you are using.
