Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Selling Well

Developer Owlcat Games and META Publishing announce that Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has sold more than 250,000 copies on PC after just one week of availability. As a result the game had more than twice as many concurrent players as Kingmaker had upon launch. But no one is resting on any laurels, as there has been ongoing work to tackle any issues that have popped up since the launch of the RPG. Here's a new Story of the Worldwound Video Developer Diary #7 and more on post-release support:
“For a long time, we’ve been working extremely hard on making Wrath of the Righteous everything we originally conceived at the start of development and even more after the phenomenal support during the Kickstarter campaign. We wanted this to be a landmark moment for CRPG fans, pushing the genre into new spaces, with mechanics that tried to give players an experience that brings the flexibility and freedom found in Tabletop adventures,” says Creative Director Alexander Mishulin. “We’re glad that players and critics are really feeling that we’ve given them that and even more. We truly are overwhelmed with the response”.

As with every video game launch, there are still issues to solve. Owlcat is already working around the clock to resolve these and give players a truly friction-free experience. With 3 patches already released and more coming every week, the team isn’t slowing down now that the game is live.

Found a mod that autowins crusade battles. Using that now instead of built in auto. No wasting time, no missing out on content.

Yea you can put crusade mode on auto. But NOTE: Once it's turned on, you can't turn it back off. Also at least one of the Mythic Paths (I believe Gold Dragon, don't quote me on that) cannot be accessed if you turn on auto mode because it requires you actively play through it to unlock it.

It may be more than 1 path, I keep reading that the Lich path is blocked if you auto-battle the crusade mode also.

That said, the mode isn't too hard, it's basically Heroes of Might and Magic lite. Although the numbers feel a little off: time to spawn more troops(1 week) seems too long, prices for troops seem far too high given how big enemy armies get, and damage on some units such as the Shield Bearer seem FAR too low. But that can all be patched, obviously. Just don't buy a lot of shield bearers for now.

I can definitely see it being pretty tedious though, if you have a general that doesn't have Pierce armor as a spell, you could be there all day vs gargoyles and some of the other mid range enemy units. It's pretty classic HoMM or King's Bounty; get big stacks of units, buff them up, hit first and win. Heal up before the last enemy dies, unless you have a ton of hospitals built. Also, having just one mega army is probably the better choice for most people until you get enough money and units to support a second general and army; there are only so many low level enemy armies around to level off of.

It's pretty amazing how this game has taken off. Hopefully, one of these days someone (other than Lord British lol) will take a stab at making a modern styled Ultima game?

You have to be a sucker for grognardian hard core D&D rulesets to like this game. I can see where there are nerds that get off on this, but to me the game is pretty bland, and the D&D based ruleset and gameplay is excessively tiresome, while the 'story' is generic pap, so beyone my play through of the basic game, there is no way I would even load this for free.

ARRRRGGGHHHH I've been having the dilemma since release on whether to buy it or not. The 50 bucks was already worth not having this constant doubt lol.

Could someone answer this question please: Is there a casual difficulty that lets the combat play out more like... say, Dragon Age Origins? I found Kingmaker's rules extremely convoluted and I lost patience. But this game looks so much better!

You can put the game on super easy difficulty (if you disable crusade mechanic at least) or if you want that mechanic, get the mod that allows you to toggle autowins. Sounds stupid, but the crusade mechanic is the worst part of the game imo, some of those fights took over 300 rounds....

But whether it is fun on Casual and lower (Yes, it goes lower) is another question.

Hmm I was 16 hours into Kingmaker and the game is kind of a blur to me (I keep mistaking it for my time in Pillars of Eternity.... or wait is that the ARPG? Oh nope that's Path of Exile lol). But I think I quit Kingmaker because of the tactical stuff you had to do as a kingdom. So it sounds like that similar mechanic in Pathfinder 2 will also be the point my interest is lost.

Ugh, this dilemma cannot be resolved by reviews and gameplay vids..

What story? The story is: Please kill demons. A lot of them. Preferably all. Thanks.

I like WotR, too, but even if I tried really hard I couldn't come up with a more boring story than yet another demon invasion. That's the weakest part of the game for me. Killing endless amounts of demons is just so stale by now. The slow TB combat which is required on higher difficulties (I'm playing on unmodified Core) does not help make it more exciting after a couple dozen hours.

I hope I can find the endurance to stick with it but it's turning into a slog of constant trial & error on Core difficulty. Some of the fights are very long and you can't save in combat so sometimes trial & error means losing many hours of progress. I know... "lower the difficulty" but that would remove any incentive to play. Like Solasta with its non-existent story, WotR is another combat simulator. The main motivation lies in trying out the many classes and builds and (mythic) paths which the game is offering for character and party development. I doubt anyone is seriously engaged by the paper-thin plot.

90 hours in and I hope Owlcat never stops making these games. The CRPG part is just like the classics but bigger and better, and with turn-based mode from launch so you can play Pathfinder/D&D like it was meant to be played. Story and writing is much improved over Kingmaker, but the management aspect is more poorly designed.

I tolerated the management in Kingmaker, but this one is just too like HoMM, but too basic and poorly designed at the same time so it just ends up as a giant waste of time. Not worth the effort when you could just be playing HoMM instead. Setting it to auto mode soon even though it'll make me miss out on loot rewards. Still, I appreciate them trying, and maybe they can salvage it with the help of modders and patches like they managed to add turn-based in Kingmaker. As that was what made Kingmaker take the step from above average to greatness for me.

The writing overall seems to be a big improvement over Kingmaker, albeit with some questionable alignment based dialogues. Not to say it's great, as the basic premise is a bit ludicrous, the main PC has to run the country, run the armies, and also adventure with up to 5 NPCs in dungeons and so forth. There are only so many hours in the day, Owlcat games.

I wonder if that 250k is counting backers, etc. ? Either way, congratulations to them, the game is an amazing achievement: fun, extremely interesting systems and lore, looks and sounds amazing, has a serious amount of well done content, as well as doubling down on the complexity of Kingmaker in some ways(may be a negative for some) but if you are into Baldur's Gate style games, look here.

*Disclaimer: I am thoroughly addicted, it's been out for a week, and I have... 75 hours played? According to GoG. That's not all 'good' time obviously, some decent amount of time playing with the character generator, and burning some time testing various paths in the quests and on every level up. Also redoing some army battles/realm decisions, etc.

So much stuff is going on under the hood in the game, I'm surprised it's only as buggy as it is. Once you're into the 'main' game, the number of bugs (or questionable design/balance decisions) jumped up a bit, but it's still playable. I think it's entirely possible to utterly lose your towns and base early on, if you screw up the army portion and get stuck waiting for extremely slow and expensive reinforcements or mercenaries, even if your 6 man team is utterly into beast mode, winning every small battle.

Still, it'd be an understatement to say I'm really enjoying the work. Also, there are so many ways to build killer class combos and setups... I can see myself doing a couple more playthroughs, for story and build reasons, let alone once DLC comes out.

The game probably needs a few numbers/balance patches... stuff is simply too expensive too early, losing armies to a bad fight is catastrophic, and the damage on 'core' style settings is literally insane too early. Later on you can mitigate, but it makes the front end difficulty too high in my opinion. Sure you can turn battle difficulty down, but it'll probably cause a lot of people to just uninstall and miss out on the amazing meat of the game.

Tool tips and tutorial tips are great, right up until the empire management pops up. It's not too complex to learn on the fly, but everything takes days or weeks, and it seems like you can easily lose the game very early into the management portion with a few bad choices too.

TLDR, if you liked the first Pathfinder:Kingmaker game, and or BG2, try this, it's already a flawed masterpiece, with only a few quick patches so far and no DLC.
