Tripwire CEO Steps Down Amid Controversy

The controversy over a tweet by John Gibson supporting the anti-abortion law that recently took effect in Texas has quickly boiled over. Yesterday it was reported that developers Shipwright Studios cut ties with the publisher and developer Torn Banner Studios distanced itself from Gibson's remarks. Now Tripwire itself is also created its own distance, announcing that Gibson has "stepped down" (presumably after some coaxing), and has been replaced by interim CEO Alan Wilson. Tripwire says Gibson's remarks do not reflect the opinions of the company:
The comments given by John Gibson are of his own opinion, and do not reflect those of Tripwire Interactive as a company. His comments disregarded the values of our whole team, our partners and much of our broader community. Our leadership team at Tripwire are deeply sorry and are unified in our commitment to take swift action and to foster a more positive environment.

Effective immediately, John Gibson has stepped down as CEO of Tripwire Interactive. Co-founding member and current Vice President, Alan Wilson, will take over as interim CEO. Alan has been with the company since its formation in 2005 and is an active lead in both the studio’s business and developmental affairs. Alan will work with the rest of the Tripwire leadership team to take steps with employees and partners to address their concerns including executing a company-wide town hall meeting and promoting open dialogue with Tripwire leadership and all employees. His understanding of both the company’s culture and the creative vision of our games will carry the team through this transition, with full support from the other Tripwire leaders.

Curious I'm the only one endlessly amused by Blue's tongue-slip of
has been replaced by interim CEO Andrew Wilson

The Andrew Wilson who's also the CEO of Electronic Arts?
But then the quoted block of text says Alan Wilson.

Yep, punching down on those poor poor CEOs.

Knew you'd find a way to make this thread dumber.

Because there is zero patience for this issue. People of his persuasion murdered doctors for practicing abortion. Let people do what they want to do with their own bodies. GM says its discontinuing an electric car and pumping out new trucks with far more emissions and no one bats an eye, because that's part of doing business. Abortion has nothing to do with this guys business

How does anyone get to be the head of a company and not know this.
Keep your mouth shut and run every public facing social media post past your legal and hr departments.

His dismissal was not even close to being "cancel cultured".

I'm sure the regular suspects will be a long claiming how he's a victim of woke or sjw bullshit. It's inevitable.

What I don't get is the people who scream from the clouds about freedom of speech this and that - don't seem to understand how freedom of speech is supposed to work. He has every right to say whatever he wants, wherever he wants. But as is the case with many things in life, he is not free from the consequences of what he says. And this is one of those consequences. Not to mention, Twitter is not the United States. It's a private company (or is it public, I don't even know anymore) etc. He may not live in the US where his speech is protected (again not from consequence though.)

And this constant bullshit about cancel culture drives me up a wall. Unless the person being "cancelled" is DEAD (and since everyone these days is so sensitive to everything, I am not calling for people to be killed or anything like that), how are they being cancelled? Because Twitter banned them or they can't post on whatever social media? That's not cancelled, since one can simply you know - talk to people the "normal" way still. GASP!

It is because popular networks like to keep throwing these words out (cancelled/woke) over and over to brain wash individuals into believing that is what it is. There will be no actual fact checking into what it means or what really happened. It just is, well if the media said it is, it must be it. This "misinformation" spreads out at a highly contagious level and you end up having everyone spew the same bs even if they don't know what it truly means.

Though it sounds good, it gets people angry, and it gets people to hate one another. It sounds like that is mostly all the media does these days in America. Get everyone so riled up and angry that you see more and more crazies out there everyday.

As you said and some others pointed out. This guy can say whatever the hell he wants. He has to live with the consequences now.

Here's the difference, donating to a political party is not even in the same vicinity as making a public declaration that you support something. One is a private dealing that the public can investigate if they want, the other is a direct public addressing.

Honestly Cutter, you keep these horrible takes and use terminology like "woke" or "virtue signalling" without actually attributing them to either actually taking place. I mean, firing your CEO because he's publicly supporting something that is so polarizing is not 'virtue signalling', it's literally the company handling the situation. Like most things people attribute to today as 'woke' or 'virtue signalling' has been the norm in major corporations for over a century. You don't take personal opinions publicly using the weight of your position to add clout to it.

When wasn't this true?
The difference is morons can, and do, broadcast their bad opinions to the entire world, rather than utter it to a small group of people.

But people, particularly people in power, have lost careers for saying dumb things for all of time. It's just, again, dumb things were much harder to say to broad groups of people prior to social media.

I mean, he wasn't some mid-level dev, he was the spokesperson of the company, the face of it, the one that showed up to meet with other companies to shake hands and make deals... bad call to make a high-octane political take on the same account you use to promote your company :-shrug-:

I know a lot of people are angry he stepped down, dealing with "freedom" and such.

However, he was the public face of the company, as every CEO is. He can say he was speaking for himself, not the company, but when you're CEO, that's never true. You're always that CEO, especially when you're posting on a twitter profile in which your profile says you're CEO, and the bulk of your posts are related to your job.

Part of the responsibility that comes with that job, and the salary, is not damaging the company. As soon as you say something heavily controversial, particularly one about removing rights and putting a bounty on the heads of many of your employees and consumers, you've stepped beyond your unofficial duties as CEO, potentially violated your fiduciary duties, and have moved into a space where you're now a distraction and no longer capable of doing your job of leading.

People weirdly downplay the detriment of being a distraction. Why is Cam Newton currently unemployed? He's not even putting out controversial opinions, he's just a distraction. Why did Jamie Tartt find it so hard to find a new job despite being one of the best premier league players? Because he was a distraction.

No one wants to deal with a distraction, so distractions get shown the door.
