The only console game I’d be willing to pay for an upgrade for would be Bloodborne. Otherwise I’ll stick to PC where games are backwards compatible “forever” and have mods and all kinds of improvements over time.

FTFY: and now $10 upgrades vs. free from Microsoft FOR NOW

No doubt if they see Sony getting away with it they'll do what Samsung usually does:

-Ads with we don't do "X" bad thing the competition does for about a year.
-Next year they do "X" bad thing because the competition got away with it.

No doubt you're right. Remember when they tried to double the price for Game Pass? Microsoft wants to be viewed as gamer friendly, but they'll push it as far as they think they can get away with, and then some. I have no illusions about the saintliness in the boardrooms at either company, but Sony really seems to be stepping backwards at a time when they really should be trying to step up.

Even easier to pick XBox over Sony now. Bethesda, Sony cheapening their cooling system on new units so they can sell at profit, and now $10 upgrades vs. free from Microsoft.

As a side note, I'd bought a few seasons of Ash vs. The Living Dead off of playstation, but just recently they've stopped selling seasons. It had been like 6 months since I'd watched, so I went back to watch again, and only the first episode was viewable, along with some promotional trailers. I went to the Playstation support site to see what was up, and couldn't even find a way to contact them. Just a 'help' bot that asked a very limited set of questions that had nothing to do with my issue. When I searched for how to contact someone real, it said click 'contact us' at the bottom of the page. Sadly, however, there IS no 'contact us' link at the bottom of the page, just a link to a facebook site. F Sony. Microsoft wins this new round by default.

It doesn't have anything to do with production costs between versions, it's the new MSRP being $70. Paying $60 for the PS4 version and getting a free upgrade is a loophole they need to close if they want that to become the norm.

I'm sure they're gonna charge $70, too, it's already starting to happen with upcoming third-party titles, even if they're Xbox One compatible.

Most of these "upgrades" seems to be little more unlocking higher framerates and resolution, and adding in higher res textures (the majority of which most likely already existed during production, and most of the remainder could be scaled up in a few hours with AI).

Not sure why they'd do this; $10 isn't going to get them much money back, it's bad press, and an opportunity for MS to boast about the way they do things.

I guess at least it's not Nintendo and their "pay us $30 for a 30yo port we downloaded off a ROM site" deal.

A free upgrade is always nice, but a $10 upgrade fee going forward is more than fair. People seem to be surprised and/or upset by this for some reason. You can still play the PS4 games on PS5 without upgrading, so I don't see any issue. Kudos to Sony and other publishers for providing free upgrades on many titles already.

Depending on point of view, 10$ is borderline reasonable for consoles, but put it in a different context and it becomes completely obnoxious and ridiculous.

Consoles nowadays are just custom packaged custom PC hardware jailed in a walled garden. When you upgrade a console, it's very much like upgrading a PC, more than ever in the history of consoles.

Transpose to the PC space. You buy game Y on computer X and play it. A few years later you upgrade to a new computer Z and migrate your game Y to computer Z on a new Windows OS version that necessitates a patch for game Y just to make it compatible with the new OS to play on new computer Z, you install the patch and launch the game and there's a pop-up "Insert 10$ to continue".

WE'D GO BANANAS.

What sounds reasonable, is in fact totally batshit crazy when you really think about it that way.
