Tormented Souls Released

Tormented Souls is now available on Steam, offering the Windows edition of this survival/horror sequel that's also now out on PlayStation 5 and coming to other consoles soon. The Launch Trailer sets the stage and gives a taste of the fixed-perspective gameplay inspired by Resident Evil and Silent Hill. If you want to check this out, the previously released demo provides a sample. Here's more:
Dropping into the secluded town of Winterlake, players investigate the disappearance of missing twin girls within the halls of an abandoned mansion-turned-hospital. Unspeakable horrors and mind-bending challenges await at every corner. Players must collect and combine resources, build weapons, and solve puzzles to unravel the mystery – and survive the night.

In the terrifying world of Tormented Souls, players will discover:

  • Welcome to Winterlake - Lead to the small, isolated town of Winterlake, something terrible happens to Caroline Walker. Waking in the dead of night, naked and alone, hooked up to decrepit medical equipment, Caroline must fight for her life as she explores the halls of the abandoned mansion. As the previous inhabitants run amuck, players must scavenge essential resources and tools to decipher clues and create a variety of weapons to protect themselves from the darkness within.
  • Keep Your Wits About You - Nothing is quite as it seems in Winterlake. Cleverly combine items and scour the mansion for clues as players face cryptic and unusual puzzles throughout the grounds of the mansion. Mirrors provide a gateway to another place and time – investigate even the seemingly mundane to discover ways to manipulate the very fabric of reality and seek your escape.
  • You are Never Alone in the Dark - The mansion may seem stark and abandoned, but the deeper you venture, the more overwhelming the horrors within become. From terrifying, wheelchair-bound atrocities to vile disembowelled crawlers prowling the halls, these tormented medical monsters aren’t the only threats that Caroline must face. There are also darker threats at play – quite literally. Early on, you are warned not to let the shadows embrace you…

I played the demo of this on Steam... it makes me remember how bad the controls really were in the first few Resident Evil games. The character moves like a tank. A particularly slow tank.

Cool indie version of Resident Evil, but I already fought the controls in games like this about 5 times, no thanks for me.

Why modding should be mandatory, could fix the FoV, movement speed, lighting, and outfits.
Most important are nudie skins for when she needs to stop and take a shower to get all the blood off her. Slap

In all seriousness, it does look fun but there are some pretty serious limitations. Includes, no key rebinding.
A truck is not a speech.A horn is not a voice.Occupation is not a protest.A blockade is not freedom,it blocks the liberty of all.
A demand to overthrow a government is not a dialogue.Expression of hate is not a difference of opinion.A lie is not the truth

I read a review that indicated there were alternate control schemes for it in the options so you didn't have to use "Tank" controls. Whether or not that is true, I have no idea since I haven't had a chance yet to try the demo. It looks promising though when it comes go going back to old school RE roots.

There was a real however for the tank controls. If you play the newer RE games (of the old games), they provide you with an alternate control scheme so whichever arrow you press will be the direction your character actually moves. Rather than left and right rotate you in place while up and down move you forward and back in the direction you're facing. The issue there is when the camera angle changes. With tank controls, you'll continue to move in the direction you were even if the camera flips on you in a completely different direction or angle. With the newer scheme, it could cause your character to actually reverse in motion because now you're facing a different direction.

The game that I never understood why it was given Tank controls was the old school PS1 Tomb Raider games. It was a fully 3D platform action game like Mario 64. In Mario 64 you had a joystick and whichever direction you moved it, Mario went. In Tomb Raider, you had to rotate her in place and again, it was like having a throttle of forward and back. Horrible control design for a fully 3D platform game. When they finally did away with that, it was like Lara had been released from her chains.

Same for me. I actually liked the atmosphere and the puzzles but the controls and camera were cruel while requiring pixel accuracy for triggering some of the interactions. This could have become a really good game with a regular 1st or 3rd person playstyle. Too bad.
