So I can't even estimate the number of times over the years that I've played
around with getting Quake running properly enough to play again. I
fiddled with software Quake, GL Quake, and various source ports, but there were
always issues that kept it from being the original experience I sought. That's
why I just want to offer a hats off to all the folks at Bethesda, id, Machine
Games, and whomever else was involved in the newly enhanced version of the
first-person shooter for doing such an outstanding job. The release noted
describe graphics enhancements, but anything that's different still seems to
fit, and gameplay feels exactly the way it did 25 years ago. And seamless, to
boot. Instead of having to add parameters to the command line or fiddle with
settings, the game just launched right away into ludicrous resolution at a 32:9
ratio better than some brand-new games might. All for no additional charge? This
was a true homerun.
I haven't had hardly any trouble getting various ports / updates to play Quake over the years...but I will say, I had an absolute blast this weekend playing thru the new episodes-Dimension of the Machine . It all felt really good & well done. Thumbs up to everyone who got this done at Bethesda & MachineGames.....
