My only 3dfx. But man, I had an S3 Virge, a Voodoo 2, maybe one between that, then a ton of ATI and NVIDIA. Still have one or two laying around, and it's fun seeing how they're probably 20% the weight of my current card, if that.

This would never happen because Nvidia owns the tech now, but it would be pretty awesome if someone made new stock of old Glide cards for retro PCs.

I actually care very little for this news and am extremely sceptical that any decent product will result, however . . .

I have my original Orchid Righteous 3Dfx Voodoo + original box + CD's lying around somewhere. 'tis weird that the card had no heatsink.

Came with Fatal Racing + Mechwarrior 2 games (and something else). Soundtrack for Mechwarrior 2 is awesome and is something I'll listen to occasionally.

This makes absolutely no sense. The gaming market back then was tiny relative today - the brand recognition wouldn't be very big - the tech would be worthless... I mean, I'm still a huge 3DFX fan (my handle has been Glide since the 90s), but this just seems silly.

The only way this works (surely) is if they become an OEM board manufacturer for AMD or nVIDIA, unless they want to ignite the retro gaming market with old tech?

Since I am an undead wraith, I actually still have an operational Voodoo2 (PCI) and an operational Voodoo5 5500 AGP card. I think they both sell for around $250 each on EBay.

If anyone almost as old as I am on this board wants them for a decent price, we could open negotiations. Would need an old-skool gamer with an old-skool rig so be aware of the requirements. Needs AGP or PCI (you wouldn't use both), but both cards (when last tested) ran Independence War and the original Unreal very buttery smooth.

The ELSA you're thinking of, the German company, went tits up in 2000. There's a Japanese partnership that was founded in 1997 that is using the name but the OG ELSA is long defunct.

Not only is Tyan still around, they are back to producing consumer level motherboards for modern CPUs. Well, they're producing exactly one motherboard for Threadripper. Their bread and butter is still enterprise oriented hardware.

Listen, unless they can even be SLIGHTLY in the market against Nvidia and AMD meaning that they can rival their products, if they can deliver the cards at normal folk prices again, they might have a chance to stay. You will look at Nvidia and AMD the luxury car brand of gfx cards and 3DFX as the poor man's car, yet it works.

Back in the late 90's--neither nVidia or 3dfx owned their own chip FABs. nVidia still doesn't. So it's doable without a fab, but this particular Jansen company seems like a prank. It's also a terrible way to announce something like this. Etc. If they had bought the "assets" from nVidia they'd have said so...

I'll believe this when I see it--tomorrow there are supposed to be "announcements"--but it doesn't sound like anything to me. I wasn't aware the 3dfx had an "assets" to speak of...;) What assets did "Jansen" buy, exactly? 20 years ago nobody could compete with them in the 3d GPU markets. But...they don't exist at all today.

Sounds like balderdash to me...;) We'll see. Reminds me of when a certain PC OEM bought the remains of C= circa 1995--you know, the company that used cows for its logo to sell systems--cannot believe I've forgotten them. Anyway, lots of us were all excited that they were going to pump new money into the C= brand and bring back the Amiga. Never happened--they sat on it and then sold it to someone else, who sold it again, and the rest is history. The Amiga is gone for good--and so is 3dfx. (The Amiga brand survives, barely, but the products are not Amigas.)

You cannot just "jump" into the 3d GPU business--like buying the "assets" *cough* on July 23, and then 90 days later popping out competitive 3d GPUs. Even with all its money and resources, Intel couldn't even come close to doing something like that. Sounds contrived, to me.

I also note that none of the original 3dfx principals are mentioned here...someone's idea of a prank, I guess.

YEP , this is just like Circuit City & TigerDirect . Technically they still both exist , even though they've long been dead. Someone just bought the online name space basically.
