Activision Blizzard CEO Calls Lawsuit Responses "Tone Deaf"

A Letter From CEO Bobby Kotick to All Employees has a follow-up to the "difficult and upsetting week" that began with a lawsuit filed against Activision Blizzard by the state of California. This is over a culture where "female employees are subjected to constant sexual harassment, unequal pay, and retaliation." Echoing a sentiment shared by many outside observers, Kotick calls many of the company's initial responses to the news "tone deaf." Here's a bit:
This has been a difficult and upsetting week.

I want to recognize and thank all those who have come forward in the past and in recent days. I so appreciate your courage. Every voice matters - and we will do a better job of listening now, and in the future.

Our initial responses to the issues we face together, and to your concerns, were, quite frankly, tone deaf.

It is imperative that we acknowledge all perspectives and experiences and respect the feelings of those who have been mistreated in any way. I am sorry that we did not provide the right empathy and understanding.

Many of you have told us that active outreach comes from caring so deeply for the Company. That so many people have reached out and shared thoughts, suggestions, and highlighted opportunities for improvement is a powerful reflection of how you care for our communities of colleagues and players – and for each other. Ensuring that we have a safe and welcoming work environment is my highest priority. The leadership team has heard you loud and clear.

We are taking swift action to be the compassionate, caring company you came to work for and to ensure a safe environment. There is no place anywhere at our Company for discrimination, harassment, or unequal treatment of any kind.

We will do everything possible to make sure that together, we improve and build the kind of inclusive workplace that is essential to foster creativity and inspiration.

I have asked the law firm WilmerHale to conduct a review of our policies and procedures to ensure that we have and maintain best practices to promote a respectful and inclusive workplace. This work will begin immediately. The WilmerHale team will be led by Stephanie Avakian, who is a member of the management team at WilmerHale and was most recently the Director of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Enforcement.

Very appropriate. And yes, that's pretty much it.

Going robotically through the empty motions of a Mea Culpa just to put it behind ASAP.

Learned a new word today. Opprobrium. Seem appropriate here.

Harvey Weinstein saw that group photo with the Bill Cosby portrait and wanted to know why he wasn't invited.

At least I know why Bobby took a 50% pay cut in his 15 month extension. I think he is gone soon.

Blizzard has been going downhill for well over 10 years. Their hubris has seen them treat employees and fanbase with steadily increasing scorn and disdain. It's taken until just the past year or so for the rabid fanbase to realize that they are not the same company that created Warcraft:OvH or even WoW.

It seems like someone over there finally realized that maybe they have gaffed one time too many and now need to walk it back. But the only truth everyone should take away from anything a corporation says : Talk is cheap.

This.

Maybe Spending $40 on the Diablo 2 remaster isn't worth it? You vote with your dollars. Then if they correct course, then you buy. Imagine if every consumer just lived by this, we'd have all the power. I mean we DO have all the power currently, but weilding it is like herding cats.

Imagine a world where idiotic upper management wasn't tolerated? Where the people making tens of millions off the backs of their lowly game developers were held to a higher standard.

I hear John Lennon in my head right now...
For your transgressions you shall be labeled a shill, called an idiot and anytime you mention facts or disagree with a tribe member you will henceforth be known as a troll. The best you can hope for is that the labels won't haunt your offspring. -RedEye9

If at first you don't succeed reissue another boilerplate screed. Also, the response is addressed to shareholders.

You can tell Ion is a lawyer because he hasn't said a peep to any of this.

Not that it matters but as an extra tidbit of interest it's the same law firm he used to work for that's representing them now.

So I guess Bobby and the upper management are going to be redistributing their wealth to the rank and file to really ensure that Blizzard is a truly fair and egalitarian place, right? No? I didn't think so. I wonder how much money they've pissed away on PR damage control on this so far?

So maybe instead of firing 1,000, they will start firing Blizzard's leadership beginning with J Allen "You think you do but you don't" Brack.
