Out of the Blue

I wasn't looking for it, but I happened to notice yesterday that the visitor counter here recently passed a milestone. It now stands at over 1,252,000,000. So the little blurb below is now updated to say "Over one-and-a-quarter billion visitors since 1997." I want to express my gratitude to the so many of you who have been coming here for so many years. Words don't really suffice, but yeah, thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Milestone Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

No bs, just game news. And always delivering. I've been coming here since 1999. Joined the forum community years later. The consistency of this site is bizarre; so little has changed in the decades it's absurd, in a good way! Same goes for my hobby and other interests: still love games, horror movies, spaghetti bolognese 🍝 😆

Never change, Bluesnews. You're a much appreciated constant in my hectic life!

This is still by far my favorite game site. No nonsense, just the news. Been coming here since 2000 I believe. Forget how I heard about it. I've worked on game sites, promoted them, joined their communities, have seen sites come and go...but if I'm being honest, no gaming news website comes anywhere close to this. You come here, read the news, no bias, no BS, just the news in a simple 1990s format that has never changed.

Don't know if you'll see this blue, but honestly, it's still the first site I visit every morning. Thanks for keeping it around.
Ditto even though I only come here like once a week. I used to come here every single day! I don't remember how I ended up here too during the late 90s. I think I started coming here when it was called Quake News.

I first became aware of this site in the late 90s from a friend who was in the IT group at Samsung Austin Semiconductor.
I think he also turned me on to hardocp (rip).
I've read both sites on and off over the years ever since.
I miss firingsquad.

It was here and VoodooExtreme for me. (mandatory RIP Billy you crazy fucker) Tom's of course as well. Not much has changed either. Still Tom's, still Blues. I have tried other sites at other times but the modern formatting of most sites is a huge turnoff for me. Too many ads, the comments sections are toxic and unhelpful, and the editorials are all clickbait nonsense. Thank the spaghetti monster for Blues.

Huge props to Blue and thanks for him keeping an excellent mostly text site with the best game world information going while so many other game content creators/organizations have abandon text sites to move into monetizing their game interest via Youtube, Twitch, streaming ect.

The Uruk-Hai and I also wish to thank you in return, having mined your visitor data for evidence of hobbits and elves (aka seafood and vegetables).

And we have played a lot of Witcher 3, Skyrim, Mario Kart and Switch Atelier games in the interim based on your recommendations, albeit we currently have a strike team out to pie the makers of Cyberpunk...

Congrats from Mordor! May you not incur our displeasure anytime soon.

John Hopkins now shows an alarming pattern. I drew a trendline to show it. If the trend holds, October, November, or December could reach a million infections a day globally.

There's so much wrong with that "prediction", I hardly know where to start.

If the virus had remained the same, vaccination hadn't begun and the measures had remained stable ( or absent ) throughout, yes, it could have merit.

But reality being what it is among a lot of others concerns. Nope. There are too many variables that have changed and are continuing to constantly change since the beginning of the data collection to have any hope of absurdly simplifying and extrapolating a trend to such an extent and such a trend is not necessarily representative anymore of the actual risks to the population due to those same ever evolving variables cited above, among others.

I was careful to include "globally" in my comment. Vaccine rates in many nations are low. 10-13% is the rate for the entire continuous continent of Africa. Central and, especially, South America aren't fairing that well either. Delta is infecting people must faster than vanilla Covid. The data shows cases doubling every 7-10 days. In other words, Delta can do in a few weeks what it took vanilla Covid to do in several months.

Doesn't change the fact that the prediction is much too simple a mathematical formula that can't possibly take into account ever evolving variables.

As for vaccination globally, quote :

"3.97 billion doses have been administered globally, and 34.32 million are now administered each day. 27.6% of the world population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 14.1% is fully vaccinated."

At the current rate, 8 billion doses will have been administered in 117 days and everyone could be fully vaccinated in less than a year, 350 days to be exact ( altho that likely won't be the case because of, well you know, let's not get into that here lest we summon them to babble once more ). That vaccination rate will likely accelerate even further as more and more vaccines are approved and the current vaccines production ramps up.

Things can change too quickly with that vaccination rate to predict anything even on the medium term. And as you pointed out, new variants can drastically alter those predictions up or even down, quote :

"There is also the concept of evolutionary trade-offs - in order to become better at one thing you often get worse at something else. The fastest vaccination programme in history will give the virus a different hurdle to overcome and squeeze it in another evolutionary direction.

"It is quite possible that changes in the virus that make it better at avoiding vaccines could end up compromising its ability to transmit in an absolute sense," said Dr Katzourakis.

He thinks the Beta variant - which has a mutation called E484K that helps evade the immune system but hasn't managed to take off - is an example of this."

You make good points. We'll just have to wait and see. I truly hope my trendline is wrong.
