Out of the Blue

Hey! Frans' new tag can also apply to the sports spoilers I've been asked to avoid. So, congratulations to the Milwaukee Bucks and their fans on winning their first NBA championship in 50 years! Now I'll stop getting irate letters from pro athletes and sports teams complaining about my failures in acknowledging their accomplishments.

Lawn mowing: Yeah, learned that lesson about cutting height a long time ago, mowing my 20 acres with a commercial zero turn mower. I have the cutting height set to 4". Easier on the mower, easier on the grass.
Be careful out there. Mowing the lawn kills 75 people each year.

Heh. I'm mister safety. I keep the roll bar up, and I use the seatbelt. The John Deere dealer always comments on the fact that my mowers (I own two) have fire extinguishers strapped to them when I bring them in for service. They never see that. When someone mentions it I tell them the story of how a mower I once owned caught fire when I was nowhere near the garage (where I have an extinguisher).

I also get complements from the service manager when he sees that I strap down the mower to the trailer. Apparently almost no one else does that, sometimes with very bad results.
Nice. No Darwin awards from you then.

I don't know if you can wait, but even though the price of lumber isn't as bad as it was this spring, it's still really high. I replaced my fence a few years ago and was told that my timing was bad, price-wise, because it was right after Trump had one of his hissy-fits with Canada, which is where almost all of the cedar used for fencing comes from. I wonder what the dynamics are with covid and Canadian lumber are right now. Can't be great.

One other thing... don't let a fence builder talk you into using poplar. It'll look just fine when it's new, but it doesn't come close to the durability of cedar.

Good advice, thanks.

Lumber is still 300% higher than pre-pandemic pricing. A 2X4 in 2019? $3. Now? $11. It was 400% a few months ago so it's starting to come down but prices won't return to normal for at least another year. And that's if everything goes right...which is starting to look like that ain't gonna' happen thanks to all this delta and delta plus shit and who knows what else we'll see before year end.

Unless it's essential I'd wait to build it. However you could go with split rail fence for a more rustic fence which would be a lot cheaper but doesn't provide privacy - personally I love how they look. You could also do a composite fence. The downside is they're plastic so you're not doing the world any favors but they look really good and last forever. I'd look for something that is perhaps made from recycled plastic or is at least recyclable.

On the same daily beast page there was a link about Cole Carini and his photo after a “gardening accident”…which really meant one of his home made explosives went boom in the bedroom as he fondled it /hidden text he showed up at the hospital missing his left hand and several fingers on his right. He also had shrapnel wounds to the neck and throat The photo is priceless. There has to be a better word to describe these poor creatures than loser.

As for the increased covid cases in unvaccinated red states, that shit was expected.

Anyone notice how Fox No-News has changed its views on vaccination. Their recent internal polling reveals parts of the nation have caught on to their ignorant lies and were losing viewers / advertisers. The bobble heads on tv were given new talking points and now think vaccinations are swell.
It didn’t hurt that President Joe Biden’s administration spoke with Fox this week and demanded they cut the shit.

Being in Kentucky, most of my lawn has been taken over by clover. Which isn't bad (except it does attract certain bugs that are a PITA if ya have outdoor pets), and I get my feet chewed up every time I walk in it (I am the Kentucky King of Flip Flops™).

They thought it was 'just the flu.' But they were wrong, and they wish they could go back. But they can't. So they thank me, and they get the vaccine. I go back to my office, write their death note, and say a small prayer that this loss will save more lives."

The Western Drought Is Wringing U.S. Farmers Dry: Watering America's Food Basket Is Becoming a Challenge

It's a short vid at just under 7 mins and well worth the watch. I just replenished my frozen veg yesterday - I always like to have at least a bag of broccoli, corn, and peas, on hand as I use them regularly. The last time I bought them was 3 months ago at $3 per bag. Yesterday? $4.50. A 50% increase in cost in 3 months?! This does not bode well for the future.

It looks nicer, too. I got it ALL over my yard, as well as mock strawberries, so there's little red 'berries' dotting everywhere.
If it outgrew all my grass, I'd be perfectly fine with that. And honestly, it feels better to walk barefoot in than grass, assuming there's nothing pokey/stingy underfoot...
