Ubisoft Announces XDefiant

Ubisoft pays off on its teasing with the announcement of XDefiant, a new free-to-play first-person shooter coming to PC and consoles with full crossplay support. Interestingly, the only PC platforms mentioned are Ubisoft Connect, Stadia, and Luna. First testing gets underway in the U.S. and Canada on August 5th for PC only. Those interested in participating should register on the XDefiant Website. Here's the XDefiant Worldwide Reveal Trailer with gameplay, cinematics, and developer commentary. Word is:
During the past 21 years, the Tom Clancy universe has become a major part of Ubisoft’s history and a reference for tactical shooters and immersive universes. Ubisoft is proud to announce the expansion of the Tom Clancy universe with a game that will let all the fans play with - and against - some of the most recognizable maverick groups from across fan-favorite franchises.

Developed by Ubisoft San Francisco and led by seasoned FPS expert Mark Rubin (executive producer) and Ubisoft San Francisco veteran Jason Schroeder (creative director), XDefiant offers an all-new experience to Tom Clancy games. Factions and characters, “Defiants,” are inspired by Tom Clancy games and beyond. Whether players are looking to play competitively or casually, XDefiant has something for everyone.

XDefiant, a Ubisoft Original, is a new take on the competitive FPS genre that offers players a high-octane gameplay experience, combining fluid and visceral combat with unprecedented freedom and personalization. XDefiant will immerse players at the forefront of the Tom Clancy universe at iconic locations in the throes of technicolor chaos, with maps mixing indoor and outdoor environments, ensuring smooth gameplay and unpredictable engagements.

Additional features include:

  • Personalized Playstyle: Players can personalize their Defiant to match their playstyle. Players can choose a faction with unique traits, abilities and ultra, then select from an arsenal of primary and secondary weapons, attachments, and a device to complete their loadout – and even tweak it on the fly (after respawning) to adapt to an ever-changing battlefield.
  • Competitive Clashes: The game offers a variety of competitive 6-v-6 arena and linear game modes, such as Domination and Escort. Combine that with a large pool of uniquely designed maps in rotation and no two matches will feel the same.
  • Diverse Factions of Defiants: XDefiant will initially feature factions such as the Wolves (Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon), Echelon (Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell) and the Outcasts and Cleaners (Tom Clancy’s The Division) battling across iconic locations. Additional Defiants will be added as the game evolves, drawing on a range of characters and abilities from the Tom Clancy universe … and beyond.

Players can go to www.playxdefiant.com to register for upcoming news, information and game tests (the first test begins August 5*).

* August 5 test only available for PC in the United States and Canada. Additional tests will be available later this year.

The title is terrible. The 😆 part of XDefiant introduces the idea of a tea-bag mentality player base.

That said, I can appreciate a company not trying to reinvent the wheel and making a very fun, very solid product inspired by other success stories. Division meets Overwatch with co-op elements that remind me of RTCW Enemy Territory. Could work, indeed.

Good luck.

I swear, "Tom Clancy's" just means "Ubisoft" these days. He was an author known for a specific style (which was all about detail and accuracy in the portrayal of the military in suspense thrillers.) Nothing that's been released with his name since around 2005 has anything at all to do with his style at all (some of the Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell titles were at least comparable - Clancy did write in tech that was believed to be around the corner from time to time - heartbeat sensors, for instance.) But starting with Vegas, and especially since Siege it's just gotten sillier and sillier.

Cartoon sci-fi is fine. Cartoon sci-fi isn't a "Tom Clancy's" any more than "Tom Clancy's Space Battle Simulator" would be.

Me reading this: "whatever. Clancy wasn't nearly as detailed as he gets credit for, and then he started doing weird spin-offs like Op-Center. This is rose colored glasses."

Me then watching the video: "oh. Oh, man, that guy was right on the money."

This looks like Borderlands meets Watch Dogs (which, maybe I'm wrong, I never played that.) Wait, not Watch Dogs. The Division. Also never played that, but this is kind of what I imagine it being, only more neon.

At 32 seconds in, would you buy a used car from either of these two beady eyed weasels?

Also behind the barker on the left, crates, hmm, foreshadowing?

I have a different political and social perspective and experience than some loud people here, but that's irrespective of my PC gaming ..and I don't know how someone would try to tangle the two together - spare me an example, I don't need to laugh any more tonight.

You know this title is awful whenever everyone on reddit is panning it. I love how the devs said it's a game with our inputs. Okay here's one - scrap this title altogether and boot whomever greenlit this garbage

Is this a joke?? XD.. aka 😆

Keep in mind that Mr. Clancy basically sold his soul to Ubi. First in 2000 when he sold his company (Red Storm), and then in 2008 when he sold his actual name.

So I doubt he'd be rolling in his grave unless it's from sheer laughter.

The dramatic irony of this statement. Ubisoft claiming each experience will "feel" unique in XDefiant... while the game looks the same as all the competitors. Can anyone point out a single original idea in that teaser footage that helps XDefiant standout in the increasingly congested market of competitive F2P crossplay shooters?

It's true, it would be impossible for me to look at screenshots or clips of this and tell it apart from Warzone, Apex, or The Division.

Also, fucking what does this have to do with Tom Clancy anything? Which book did I miss where randos go full gang-wars inside a city with energy shields and invisibility cloaks? How did Ubisoft manage to make the Far Cry and Assassins' Creed series more realistic and grounded than anything Tom Clancy?

Phantoms would have been way cooler than this. I'm not sure why they're even showing this off, the gameplay has terrible performance in a lot of the clips... Eugh!

Guess I'm not surprised, with them making that alien R6 game.
