NightDive Teasing PowerSlave Remake?

NightDive CEO PowerSteve tweets a teaser, presumably for the next classic game to get one of NightDive's modernized makeovers. There's a discussion of what game the image is from, but the favorite theory is PowerSlave, aka Exhumed (thanks PCGamesN). For a refresher, here's a trailer and description of this Build-engine first-person shooter from its GOG.com Listing:
Destination: The ancient Egyptian city of Karnak. Alien forces possessing horrifying powers have sealed off the once thriving community from all outside contact. As a covert operations specialist, you have been trained for all forms of contingencies. Nothing can prepare you, however, for the nightmare you are about to enter...

Features:

  • First-person viewpoint action.
  • 20+ levels of nonstop gameplay through an ancient Egyptian city and the tomb of the Pharaoh Ramses.
  • Real time fully 3D rendered gameplay allows you to move between floors within a single level
  • Cross bridges and swim through underwater grottoes.
  • With just a machete to start, search for 7 other weapons including hand grenades, a flame thrower, an M-60 machine gun, and a magical cobra staff.
  • Dynamic lighting creates stunning visual effects.

You're right.
I didn't look at it like a source port, but that is a lot more accurate than what I was describing.

Annoyed that everything is called a remake these days, even when they're clearly remasters. This dev hasn't done a single actual remake of a game.

In this case it is kind of a little of both. Many of their games are remade on their Kex Engine.
It adds a lot of modern conveniences like adjustable FoV, widescreen support, crossplay and mods (for some games), and things like reduced fog in games like Turok.

But I do take your point that you're basically getting an unaltered looking game, albeit with better widescreen and FoV.
For me, that is good enough.

Their SiN remake is supposedly going to be a visual step-up. I'm keeping my eye on that one.

They're not remade, they're just using a source port, while still using the original files for the most part. The game itself is still the same. No one calls GZDoom a remake, because it isn't.

Remakes recreate EVERYTHING from the ground up. For example the new RE2 and RE3 games are remakes. Blood Fresh Supply isn't.

Hmmm, I never heard of this one growing up in the 90s... Well, normally I would be all over these classic FPS games made to work on modern OS however this doesn't look like it has mouse look 360 degrees. Those are one type of FPS I can't do these days (old school Doom and Wolfenstein included). I NEED mouse look at the minimum. The feeling where your eye sight is locked straight down just doesn't do it for me and you really feel a loss of freedom/movement without it. It's why I haven't picked up Doom 64 yet.

Wish they could mod these older games to have a free look but I guess they weren't designed with that in mind so you'll see some oddities looking around...

I remember playing this (as "Exhumed") on the Playstation 1. That's about all I remember though since the game itself wasn't exactly memorable.
That game (console version), did Metroid Prime before Metroid Prime. The PC version was a different beast, but with stellar level design.

Interesting to hear about the console version...

I don't really understand games like this. If I wanted to play a 1990s game I would get a 1990s game, mod packs and done.
In an era where one dude in his basement can make photo realistic games, this has little appeal to me.

Jim, you don't have to. There are people that are loving these and a profit to be made, what more is there to say?

Yes! I loved Exhumed! The level design was surprisingly good considering I’d never heard of it before… definitely one of my favourites.

Edit: it’s funny about the name being changed for certain parts of the world. I assume it’s because they were concerned about having the word slave in the name…

And yet they all look like shit anyways because photo realism requires tons of work and effort.
Days ago, was curiously reading 2000 old posts that Blue made available, interested in people that post today (so many gone, what's become of them, how they fared? Creston comes to mind ).
Even then your posts had the same "positive" look

Powerslave / Exhumed ? Excellent, count me in !

Replayed it through the years, last time in february 2020, fantastic game, a favorite of mine.
Frankly, don't know why they show it in awfully low resolution when you can play it in the highests, with Dosbox-X (mind the -X).

I think it's a matter of knowledge: you wouldn't operate with a fork and spoon, and little idea of the matter.
I wouldn't play VR or old games without my specialised set of apps and pro tricks, that make a substancial and critical difference.

Used Dosbox-X, a version with instant savestates and *very good graphic* enhancements.
Cheat engine, because it's **hard** later on, and Glovepie for crucial K&M turning and look around controls.

Sure, would not play it in PS1 even if they paid me (tried it first and seriously, no deal haha).
Not only ugly, but the PS1 *was not* the full PC game but a different and very toned down version.
Deserving PS1 games would be Blam Machinehead, Einhander, Klonoa, etc.
Accelerated with Epsxe and savestates, of course.

The same applies to the most advanced emulators that some find iffy and not workable.
But they work perfect, *if* you first find what you *need* to know.

The same with a ton of fine 2000 to 2010 legal windows games in MyAbandonware, that work perfect in win10 with a little tinkering (PCGamingWiki, compatiblility Win xp sp2, free Large Applications Allowed):
Mage Knight Apocalypse -do not max graphics, you can force resolutions-
Area 51 (also to a lesser degree, Area 51 Blacksite)
Star Trek Elite Force 2
The hunt aka Chernaya Metka,Traque,Black Label
Revolution
-For nostalgia:
Vivisector Beast Within
Pariah
Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter (cheat engine infinite shield for space battles, etc).
Will Rock
etc

I think PowerSlave is the only one of these games I didn't play back in the 90s. Maybe I was more of a fan of Iron Maiden's album
