Steam Deck Fuels FOMO Fever

Valve's plans to thwart scalpers for its newly announced Steam Deck handhelds appears to have taken a faceplant into the deck. As noted on PC Gamer, preorder reservations for the units are going to exorbitant prices on the scalpers paradise that is eBay. And since there is nothing to order yet, attempting to buy one of these units is going to require degrees of trust and cooperation that are not always common on the internet. Many of the listings are over one thousand US dollars, and we see one listing for a 512 GB unit with an ambitious buy it now price of $5000, despite the indications that the 512 GB models won't arrive for a year. On the other hand, for those who want to compare deck sizes, word is the Steam Deck SSD is upgradeable but doesn't want you to do it.

On a handheld unit? No, I can't. As for playing away from home, like I said if I ever used public transport, maybe. As for whenever I get where I am going, I'll be doing whatever I travelled to that location to do. If I wanted to play video games, I'd have stayed at home.

Cool, then it's not for you. But millions of other people have a use for such a product and can enjoy plauing games on them.

You are correct, I don't. What is the point of portable gaming? To have less enjoyment? To strain my vision? If all portable gaming disappeared via magic, I'd be fine with that. I guess if I was spending some amount of time on public transportation I might have a greater interest. Here's to hoping that is never the case...

To game when you're not at home, duh. I thought this would be obvious, but apparently not. For me, it'll also serve as a semi-replacement for my 10+ year old laptop.

As for the rest, get glasses and put in earbuds/noise cancelling microphones. You can have just as much fun playing many games on the go as you would at home.

I don't think they created artificial scarcity. I think they just underestimated the interest in this device. By several factors.

Seems you solved your own mystery. I'm like you though, I don't really get it either. In public transport, I won't be able to immerse myself into a game enough nor would I want to since I'm not in my sanctuary -- somehow it's different than, say, reading a book while on the train. Then there's the "It's cool while on vacation!" argument, which always sounds legit and I've wasted money on portable gaming devices in the past because of this one. But in the end, on vacation I tend to be doing anything other than what I'm doing at home, like visiting towns, going to a lake etc. And at home? I've no idea why I'd want to be gaming on a portable device at home when my beast is within arm's length basically. So yeah, like you I get it but I also don't get it.

I reserved the 512GB edition.

This device is going to BE my PC. I'm planning to run my current PC with RTX2060 headless and stream "heavier" games to my Deck, otherwise the Deck can handle most of my indie games and emulated titles. Then once the dock comes along this will be my new primary machine, one I can take with me when I lie on the couch, or go to the in-laws, or sit at the desk with mouse+keyboard.

I doubt the chip shortage and supply chain will be fully recovered.
My guess is if you didn't get a reservation in this weekend you won't be picking one of these up in 2022.

why buy a scalp..it's easy enough to reserve one?

Not anymore. Reservations window was exactly 1.5 hours. FOMO validated.
Not even close. I reserved one past 5:30PM EST on Saturday, more than 28 hours after reservations started. As of Sunday afternoon, they are still available. Zero reason to give scalpers any attention.

Longer actually. Reservations were closed to everyone but Steam users with purchases on their account before June, for 48 hours.

It'll be interesting to see how opening it up will affect orders.

"Available," as in they continue to take back-orders. A reservation on Saturday afternoon will get you one in (they hope) Q2 or Q3 of next year, not by the end of this year. Scalpers will make big bank on what they nabbed of the few shipping out in December.
As has already been noted numerous times, this is not some medicine someone needs to survive, it's an entertainment device. It's still available to order. Yes, there will be a delay now... I think I'll get by in the meantime. I look at it as a positive, and had no interest in being first in line. Let the early adopters deal with the initial production issues. When my reservation slot comes up, it will be in enough people's hands to determine if it is worth the money, or if I should just put the $5 back into my Steam wallet.

Wondering why hardware scalping still isn't illegal in most countries.
Because this technology is not a need. It's a want. People don't need a Valve Dock to survive.
Was referencing other hardware, all of which are used as work tools. And people often need to work to survive.

Kotaku are reporting that eBay is going to take down all those scalper listings because they have a policy that pre-sales need to be shipped in 30 days - and that clearly isn't going to happen here.

Reporting...they are all still up. I see one for $10,000 lol...

A better argument is, why support a company that does nothing to combat scalping? It really wouldn't be that much work to implement a reservation system to limit a widget per customer. Hotels have been doing it forever. EVGA is doing it. Which is why next time I'll be buying their hardware and not MSI - or any of the other hardware manufacturers - who clearly doesn't appreciate my business. Fuck me? Fuck them.
