I played through GTA1 2 and 3 fully, then basically missed the rest until GTA5. Played through (decent sale price) GTA5 fully expecting some great writing, based on the reviews and comments, and I was thoroughly underwhelmed. I'll probably skip GTA6 until it's on some ridiculous sale, if at all.
These games seem overrated to me.
The driving is okay, the flying is a bit weak, the combat is atrocious, and the writing is average at best. Voice acting, to be fair, was pretty good.
If people are playing just to drive around and listen to the music, well I can see that, at least.
The series had great writing "for the time" when in the early 2000s, and 90s games didn't have strong story elements, but the writing hasn't evolved like the graphics have. I think the ultimate appeal for GTA games is for teens and young adults - I remember enjoying just being able to drive around exploring an open world with some cool music on, but once you've had a driver's license for a while, it's more fun to just drive somewhere nice in real life imo.
Plus the 'open world' concept in games is pretty common now too, so they no longer have a several draw cards.
I've played GTA 3, Vice City, SA, and GTA 4, and a tiny bit of 5. And I've never finished a single one because I always get tired of the missions, it doesn't take long before it feels like you are playing courier simulator, at which point you want to be getting paid
Maybe they need to do a nuclear apocalyptic one or something like that.
