Out of the Blue

Happy Amazon Prime Day! Presumably you've sent out all your Amazon Prime Day Cards. And I hope you have striking outfits picked out for all your Amazon Prime Day parties. You know, for all the hype, I'm pretty sure I've never actually bought anything on Prime Day. It's not for lack of trying, the promise of a once-a-year sales is a good draw. I just never seem to find anything during the festivities to draw me in. Maybe this will be the year?

Prime Time Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

the stats on their own are worthless. What is the age range of participants vs underlying issues? We had someone in our village die from Covid complications, he was double vaccinated (pfizer). He was also 81 and had lung issues from being a miner (he was on oxygen). But since his covid test was a technical positive, it wasnt his crappy lungs that was the final blow but covid.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)01358-1/fulltext The lancet has some good stats but doesnt declare the full age ranges. You could be a champion athlete or a 90yo with emphysema.

If deaths are to be believed then technically we arent doing too bad. Quite a high rate of delta variants, hospital admissions not rising at the same rate, deaths not rising at all and mostly single figures for the last 3 weeks. Almost everyone I know is double AZ vaccinated so far (I got AZ for both of mine). I know one person who is PF/AZ and a few PF.

I do have one source - a family member is a radiographer at a very busy outer london hospital. They chest xray every suspected case so they are as covid front line as you get. Admissions are not spiking in their hospital and deaths are non existant. To put it into perspective, last year was 14 hour days for 3 months for them with beds at critical (after discharging all who could be and cancelling scheduled).

Our schools are testing (LFT not PCR) twice weekly for all staff and pupils, zero cases so far in our village school, zero in the local high school (10 miles away).

We bought some dog food, but that's it. There's some good deals, sure, but it's always on electronics and vacuums and stuff. Which we're fine on. Ah well.

Edit: I totally answered that wrong...sorry trying again....

Rich people, in short. Rich people who travel on short notice for example. Rich people who for a health reason can't or prefer not to take the vaccine yet is another common one. At least "health issue" is thr reason they tell me. Rich people who are on the board of a company that mandates a negative test or vaccine card to enter the building.

So yeah, the people with the money to pay for it. Only the vaccine itself is free, so the business model revolves around services. Most people, rich or not, haze ZERO use for my company at this point unless they need to travel by airplane on short notice. They can get the vaccine at the drug store or at the doctor for free in many places or for a co-pay in others. Testing is easily gotten now too for much cheaper.

In our area, it feels like the people who are going to get the vaccine have pretty much done it and now the adults who won't get it have to keep paying us for tests so they can go do things with everyone else. I'll be honest, I didn't expect testing to be the core of our business model for long after the vaccine became available. I was really naive to how many people wouldn't take it. The news of the delta variant(s) hasn't seemed to change that much yet. At least not in my experience.
IIRC, you're in CA? What kind of people are you seeing again and again for testing? Older? Younger? Men? Women?

I had read that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines had the best efficacy against Delta and that was only 50% fully immunized. Well, I was off by 1% from my recollection.

Quote: "Similarly, a study under review revealed that after both doses, the Pfizer vaccine showed 88 percent effectiveness against symptomatic disease caused by the Delta variant compared to 93 percent against the Alpha variant. Two doses of AstraZeneca vaccine were 66 percent effective against Alpha but only 60 percent against Delta. But with just single dose of either of the two vaccines, the vaccine effectiveness was only 51 percent against the Alpha variant compared to 33 percent against Delta. This effectiveness falls below the 50 percent efficacy threshold the FDA had set for designing safe COVID-19 vaccines; in which a vaccine should prevent at least half of the vaccinated people from getting COVID-19 symptoms."

Well things are finally picking up speed with vaccines here - better late than never I suppose. Me ma go her second on Friday. And my second shot got bumped up to July 10 from the original Aug 31st. Here's hoping this delta plus variant isn't the fly in the ointment, Hans.

From the latest data, vaccines efficiency against the delta variant is as follows:

Moderna/Pfizer = 88% ( instead of 93% for original strain )

Astrazeneca = 60 ( instead fo 66% for original strain )

J&J, no idea, but probably similar losses of efficiency as the other ones.

There's already delta "plus" tho ( AY.1 variant ).

Edit: Corrected percentages from the National Geographic Article

mRNA vaccines as well as the new Novovax one seem pretty strong against it. Also, the mRNA companies are busy producing a booster that prevents the variants that should be ready at the end of this year. We're still a couple years out from getting this under control, since the vast majority of the world needs to be upgraded to 5G so that we can beat this thing.

My mom wanted a new mattress, which is a great item for prime day. I saved $100 on one for her just by getting it today. I just wished there were some Nvidia 3060 cards in stock I could save cash on for myself. Maybe next year, or on black Friday/cyber monday.
