Atari was fun back in the 80's when you would imagine that dot on the screen was a space ship. Since then that Brand name has been only associated with the worst kind of schlock and failed re-boots. This looks to continue that tradition.

Meh, I can build a better system with the spare parts I have laying around, run Debian on my own, and run an emulator if I want to remember the bad old days of early gaming. It's not like ROMs are hard to find.
You could, but it wouldn't look like an Atari 2600 or have seamless transition between 2600 gaming and PC.

Want to bet? It's just a plastic case. There is literally nothing special or magical about it. It only vaguely looks like the OG VCS and nothing at all like the Heavy Sixer.

Furthermore, you can seamlessly transition between emulation and PC desktop usage. Depending on the DE I use, it could be a simple input based trigger. There's no magic in this whatsoever.

No magic at all. I could probably build one and put it into an old atari console if I really wanted to get fancy about it. In an afternoon while drinking too much. I am not saying it is worthless..just not 400. Maybe half that. If it costs too much to produce and sell at 200 (at the max)..they screwed up IMO. I think people assuming they are aiming for a well-to-do market are giving them way too much credit. This will be on sale for half price or lower within a matter of months.

I challenge you both to create a functional replica. Should be a fun project, if you take on the challenge. Please post pictures and videos of the unit, as well as the total cost. ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘

It's worth noting that the original 2600 in 1983 costed US$199, which is equivalent to $849.88 in 2020. I remember my parents had to set aside money to buy one for the family. It wasn't cheap back then.

The base system is $300 and a classic joystick is $60. By the time you factor in shipping and tax that's around $400. The $400-bundle includes a pair of controllers. However, I think they should offer a bundle with two classic joysticks like the original 2600 offered back in the 80s.
That would be worth noting, and an equivalent comparison to today's dollars, if technology had not progressed since 1983. The problem lies in the fact that technology has progressed, and 1983's technology is not worth the equivalent in today's dollars. This is a nostalgia grab, and that's fine, but it can not reasonably be compared to what entertainment costs now.

$400? Thatโ€™s the same price as a PS5 digital. Lol at this.

The retail price for a PS5 is $500. The actual price is $800 - $2000. So no, it's not the same price as a PS5.

What does this do that the Atari Flashback 8 doesn't do for much cheaper? https://www.amazon.com/Atari-Flashback-Console-Wireless-Controllers-gamecube/dp/B0779JXNV9/

It's a PC/console hybrid, whereas the Flashback 8 is purely a console recreation. A person is paying $100 just to play Atari games. I believe the VCS is primarily for enthusiasts and developers with revenue sharing.

$400 US to play Pong. Gee, it sounds awful tempting but I'm afraid I'll have to pass.

Its a low end x86-64 PC in a cool case with a custom version of Debian. And a bunch of old and new games.
You can install windows on it if you want.

I think if they went the FPGA route and made something closer to what Analogue and Terra Onion are doing, they would have faired much better.

Based on gamerevolution and pcmag reviews it might be best to stay away from this, unless you're a hardcore Atari enthusiast.

It's a reasonably powerful emulation machine (much better than a RPi) that can do way more than Atari emulation if you wipe it and install something else. I wouldn't buy one, but it's not a scam.
