Microsoft "All-In" on Gaming

An article on Xbox Wire features a conversation between Satya Nadella and Phil Spencer where the Microsoft CEO and head of Xbox discuss why Microsoft is "all in" on gaming. This is excerpted from a larger article on Bringing the Joy and Community of Gaming to Everyone. On a related note, Eurogamer.net parses recent comments from Spencer, calling them a "thinly-veiled dig" at Sony's PC strategy "of releasing its PlayStation-exclusives on PC years after they come out on console." Here's Nadella's take on being all-in:
As a company, Microsoft’s all-in on gaming. We believe we can play a leading role in democratizing gaming and defining that future of interactive entertainment, quite frankly, at scale. There are really three, I think, areas or key areas where we believe we have incredible competitive advantage. First is our leadership in cloud computing; second, the resources we have to build out the subscription value with Xbox Game Pass; and third is our overall focus on empowering creators. I’m really excited about the opportunity in gaming.

It was a decision which had exactly zero impact on me. That said, I was a little surprised they gave up on it so quickly.

Hey MS, remember when you took a bunch of PC games and made them exclusive to XBOX and then let PC gamers have SOME of those games YEARS later? (Halo) Or started a bunch of series on both PC and then XBOX but then fucked over PC gamers by only putting certain entries on XBOX? (Fable, Gears of War) Or "committed" to PC gaming by doing a lazy port of an XBOX interface and jamming it into Windows?

Yeah, you can go blow goats, Phil.

Exactly. This (among many other things) is why MS can not be trusted at all. They still have only one goal in gaming: Xbox. Ever since the plan has failed to brute-force every PC gamer into buying a Xbox they are taking a different approach by forcing Xbox upon the PC platform. Everything on Windows that has to do with gaming is called Xbox. They don't care about the PC at all.
It will be quite interesting to see if the new version of Windows that will be revealed on June 24th will finally let the cat out of the bag with 100% forced UWP walled garden apps. There is a reason why Valve keeps investing in Proton and working on their own consoles. Gabe has sources. He probably knows exactly that MS is up to no good at all when it comes to PC gaming and the future of a relatively (DirectX dominance already is "walled garden lite") open PC platform.

I hope Microsoft keeps half-assing it.

With most of us playing on their OS, which they can update arbitrarily to do whatever the hell they want, I prefer the incompetent, annoying but relatively benign MS.

A person I’ve known for a long time owns a CrossFit. I accosted her recently as she left the coffee shop.
I asked if they had personal trainers because I was wanting washboard abs like Henry Cavill. Before I could continue the ruse she said it would only take two days to get them. I’m not very quick on my toes but think I did a nice job picking from the terminator multiple choice list that came into view, “I asked if there was a pill I could take for faster results.”💪

They probably don't remember, actually, given most of the people involved in those decisions don't have the same position or even work there anymore.

Microsoft's commitment to gaming on Windows has come and gone. It typically wanes before the release of a new nextgen console, but I think this is the first time they've done a 180 and decided to include PC gaming as part of their nextgen strategy. If it means Xbox exclusives on Windows, I'm all for it! It means Elder Scrolls 6 could have a sim-ship Windows release. 🙂👍

Con:

I am not holding my breath. But I have really enjoyed 3 months of GP for £3. No way I am likely to pay £20+ for the same.

Oh wow! They’re all-in this time, they’ve never said that before!

To be fair, they’ve been doing a good job of releasing PC versions of their first party games. While UWP is a bit annoying, the crossplay it allows for is nice.

Just like how they derogated from Windows development, then recanted on that statement and reassured everyone that they were "all in". 😁

On a side note, their latest patch (June 8) broke my system tray icons. Install at your own risk. I had to uninstall the specific KB. They added this annoyingly new sys tray icon that pops up fake news, and then when clicked on, opens Edge (even if it's not your default browser). The problem is when you disable the new fake news icon and then reboot. Way to go, Microsoft!
