Battlefield 2042 in October

The new Battlefield Trailer just debuted as planned, confirming Battlefield 2042 is indeed the title of the next installment in the military shooter series. This was actually revealed earlier, as a listing for the game popped-up this morning on Origin, offering some details. Since leaks and teases are all intrinsic to the marketing of this game, it's impossible to tell the mistakes from the scheming at this point. The cinematic clip shows off futuristic combat using wingsuits, roboto dogs, hovercraft, high-tech tanks, and more. Oh yeah, and a soldiernado. It concludes promising a gameplay reveal on June 13th. The game's Origin Listing is once again live, including a FAQ saying it is due on October 22nd. Here's the description:
Battlefield 2042 is a first-person shooter that marks the return to the iconic all-out warfare of the franchise. In a near-future world transformed by disorder, adapt and overcome dynamically-changing battlegrounds with the help of your squad and a cutting-edge arsenal.

With support for 128 players, Battlefield 2042 brings unprecedented scale on vast battlegrounds across the globe. Players will take on several massive experiences, from updated multiplayer modes like Conquest and Breakthrough to the all-new Hazard Zone.

We are now the gatekeepers of advertising.
To this day I still go postal when I think of polar bears in Coca-Cola commercials and frogs marketing Budweiser.
But for some reason I'm perfectly fine when a gorilla tosses Samsonite luggage.

I get it that's its a game, that it's set in the close future, and that the trailer has probably very little to do with the actual gameplay, but this trailer is so ridiculously over the top that it was painful to watch. What little interest I had in this game (and I actually did have a little interest) has now waned almost completely
Yeah, I'm with you. I realize that it's emergent gameplay that manipulate the game mechanics to achieve a crazy kill like that, but I'm not sure it needs to be in the advertising. Still, with the inclusion of bots (I don't really like playing with strangers, but if I can convince my family members to pick this up, we could play 4 person coop vs. bots, that would be cool).
Then you are missing out on the most entertaining thing about the Battlefield style of gameplay: frantic chaos resolving into absurd sequences of events. It's a sandbox of combat carnage, and sharing stories with your friends of what you've witnessed or done on the Battlefield is part of the experience.

One time I was in the back of a transport chopter as we pursued a buggy that was hopping through the hills. It was making a break for it's home base. We started taking on anti-aircraft fire, and when alarms went off I put away my repair tool and bailed, safely landing outside the base. I turn to watch our pilot weave unsuccessfully, his chopter now engulfed in flames and tumbles during free-fall into the enemy base. The pilot jumps out just as the chopter falls between two warehouse buildings, but having timed the exit of vehicle perfectly, he does a holy-mofo-Jesus-walk seamlessly onto the building's roof... takes no fall damage, whips out his rocket launcher and fires a round towards the AA turret, then back to his assault rifle for some spawn kills like Rambo. And then he's sniped in the face!

Don't scorn its preposterous nature... embrace it!
For sure, I've done crazy stuff like that in BF2. I understand those are the game mechanics. Everybody knows it's the game mechanics. Which is why I just think it's silly to put it in the advertising.

That happened in game for the first time back in BF3 and the move is a called a RendeZook. Here's the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOaGhE_sejI and it's been duplicated many times since (well the actual original happened in 1942, but this clip is much more famous).

Sorry that you're so salty over this, but to veterans of the series it's awesome to see DICE paying homage to one of the top crazy "only in Battlefield" moments that a player pulled off in the middle of gameplay.

Nice homage to some BF1942 jank. That's pretty cool, if you know what it's about. I've played BF1942, and I still didn't know. I'd guess 99% of their targeted audience today doesn't know, or care. I'm not salty, not sure you know what that "term" means if you think it applies to me in this case. I couldn't care less, this is the problem. This trailer made me care less. I'll still be checking out some gameplay videos if and when they appear but Battlefield has lost a lot of it's charm and appeal to me over the years, maybe they regain some of it in this iteration, who knows. Oh, well back to Tarkov.

But they were just being edgelords! LOL You just didn't get it! You see they were making fun of the fact that people are so mad. Their comedy is just over your head dude, you're not hip enough. It was a big meta-commentary on society, and not uneducated mouth-breathers projecting their fuckwit bile towards anyone dumb enough to listen.

Really though, it was pretty sad. And as per the #1 comment on the 2042 official trailer: "this got more likes in one hour than the BFV trailer ever did"

I think for the increase in map size they're talking about, you might need AI for it not to feel empty.

Plus the AI would have to be handled server-side for sure, unless you're playing solo then your CPU would have the handle all the AI.

I guess I've been watching too much Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator 2 footage, where they can render 1,000,000+ units onscreen all their their own AI, they just do it on a GPU. It's pretty nuts.

I don't think that 64p+32ai per side is too much. Current-Gen consoles are fucking beasts. 8 cores, 16 threads, can utilize DX12 finally properly, SSDs etc. It's more than enough. And the AI is pretty lite from what I've experimented with CPU-wise from SWBF2.

I mean shit, Planetside 2 plays fine on a PS4, and that's 256 people per map.

Maybe you don't like WW2, or girls, but it was exactly what one would expect from a BF trailer, yet it was UNIVERSALLY panned. Why is that?

I feel like this was an age related (or life experience related) complaint. Everybody at my admittedly older age level was blown out of the water by those BFV trailers. Half my FPS group built new computers for BFV. Don't just listen to the loudest whining 4chan trolls.

My prediction is that AI soldiers will be added ON TOP of the 128 human players.

I think that the total count will be closer to 64 players + 32 AI per team, or even 64 AI per team. So a final count closer to 200. That would actually fill up these massive maps and make them feel full, while at the same time not breaking their servers. They already have AI working perfectly in-game with human players in SWBF2, and it's hard to tell them apart.

Ugh, I kinda hope not, lol. I will have a brand new PC by the time this game comes out, but there has got to be a realistic limit for what can get rendered on screen as well as what can reasonably be expected to be transferred over the internet, data wise. I'm on Gigabit fiber, but that's the minority in the US for sure. Plus, just imagine the mess of 200 human + AI players... expect to get killed almost immediately on any open map as infantry, or at least shot up a bit. 40+ prone campers per team, sure they will be spread out, but that's what it's going to end up being.

Also, reading up on the way they are planning to trickle out Specialists... does that just mean different player models, or actual different gadgets too? I'm assuming the latter, but it's not fully explained yet. Obviously we'll find out, but I'd hate to see some of them locked behind DLC/Season Pass/whatever paywalls later.

Still, overall, like I said below, I am psyched for this. I went with an ultrawide screen monitor this build as well, I wonder how it'll hold up with this level of chaos on screen.

Maybe you don't like WW2, or girls, but it was exactly what one would expect from a BF trailer, yet it was UNIVERSALLY panned. Why is that?

Do you think that most of these people would have reached this conclusion on their own? If they had no external influences, never read a Reddit comment, a Youtube comment, or spoke to anyone about this trailer, how many people do you think would have ABSOLUTELY HATED it, so much to try boycotting the game? Probably not that many. How many people were really SO OFFENDED at the inclusion of women in a WW2 game? As if millions of angry teenagers are actually budding historians who care about realism in a franchise where you can RPG jets. The answer is nobody would have given a shit unless they learned they need to be giving a shit, that this is a hill worth dying on.

Reminds me of Star Wars "fans" who all learned what a "Mary Sue" character is right around when Ep. 7 introduced us to a female lead. Right! We're all outraged! Don't you know that Rey is just a MARY SUEEEEEE? This term I learned YESTERDAAYYYYYY?? lol. It's like bitch, Anakin Skywalker is the most Mary Stu to ever exist, he won a fucking deathrace against the best podracers in the galaxy when he'd never even piloted them once. He also managed to blow up a droid doughnut space station just by luck, oh and spinning, that's a good trick, all while he's a goddamned toddler OH AND HE BUILT C-3PO FOR THE LULZ WHEN HE WAS 6. Lol, and nobody gave a shit. Mary Sue character archetypes have existed in fiction as long as fiction has existed. But it's like overnight everyone's a fucking literary critic if it means we can use it to shit-talk a female lead in a movie. It's fucking dumb.
