As I've mentioned before, while I don't always recall prominent dates, June 6th
always stands out strongly in my mind as the launch date of the D-Day invasion
of Normandy in 1944. As noted
in this article, there are others who still respond to the significance of
this, as several ceremonies still take place to commemorate the occasion. It
also has some details: "On D-Day, 4,414 Allied troops lost their lives, 2,501 of
them Americans. More than 5,000 were wounded. On the German side, several
thousand were killed or wounded." As I've also said in the past, it is almost
impossible to imagine the courage it took to storm those beaches.
