Chivalry 2 Open Beta This Month

Publisher Tripwire Interactive and developer Torn Banner Studios invite players to participate in a crossplay beta test for Chivalry 2 beginning on May 27th. This will allow Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation gamers to hack, slash, and bash each other prior to the launch of the medieval combat sequel on June 8th. Preloads of the beta should begin on May 26th, and the Windows client will be available through the Epic Games Store. All the details are in this post by Torn Banner Studios. Here's an Open Beta Announce Video Dev Diary and more on the news:
Strongholds were sieged, enemies were crushed, and legends were made in the recent and successful Chivalry 2 Cross-Play Closed Beta. If you missed out on the medieval mayhem, fear not! Torn Banner and Tripwire Presents are giving all players everywhere one more chance to master the blade. Featuring a ton of new maps, features, and updates based on player feedback from the Closed Beta, there is a wealth of new content to experience and discover in the upcoming Cross-Play Open Beta program.

Chivalry 2 Cross-Play Open Beta content and highlights include:

  • Cross-Play Across All Platforms: Cross-Play smashes the boundaries between PC and console, allowing players to face-off on the battlefield together, regardless of platform.
  • The Slaughter of Coxwell (New Team Objective Map): The Mason Order seeks to make a brutal example of the peaceful village of Coxwell after it declared support for Argon II. Burn the village, breach the gate, steal the gold, and kill the soldiers.
  • The Battle of Darkforest (New Team Objective Map): Agathian forces lie in wait, ready to ambush the Mason army that marches forth to kill the Duke of Fogbern Keep. Destroy the barricade, push the convoy, capture and hold the gatehouse, and kill the Duke.
  • The Siege of Rudhelm (Team Objective Map): After weeks of siege, Agathian forces begin a final assault upon a Mason stronghold defended by the Mason heir. Push the siege towers, capture and hold the gatehouse, burn the tents, push the siege ramps, capture and hold the courtyard, and take down the heir to achieve victory.
  • The Battle of Wardenglade (Team Deathmatch/FFA Map): The armies of the Mason Order and Agathian Knights meet in an evenly matched open field of battle.
  • Tournament Grounds (Team Deathmatch/FFA Map): Elite warriors of the Mason Order and the Agathian Knights fight for supremacy and adoration of the crowd.
  • Free-for-All (New Game Mode): It’s you versus everyone else in this chaotic free-for-all frenzy appearing for the first time in the Cross-Play Open Beta.
  • Full Customization (New for Open Beta): Customize your in-game appearance and unlock a wide variety of cosmetic options as you earn experience with each of the game’s four base classes and 12 sub-classes.
  • Duel Servers (New for Open Beta): Available for PC only, players can choose to enter special servers set up for players looking to hone their 1-on-1 dueling skills with other players. Participants are asked to abide by the honor system and respect players aiming to focus on 1-on-1 duels.
  • 64/40 Player Server Options (New for Open Beta): Experience the chaos of epic medieval battlefields, charge forth to the frontlines of battle, and experience true mass-scale combat supporting up to 64-players designed to capture the intensity and scope of “The Battle of the Bastards” from Game of Thrones. For players interested in more strategic battles requiring more communication and teamwork, options to join 40-player servers for Team Objective mode will also be available.
  • Same Platform Parties (New for Open Beta): Players can now group up and form a party on the same platform before joining a Cross-Play match.

From what little I've seen of the closed beta of this game, Mordhau still seems like a better game.
I think Chivalry 1 is better than Mordhau. Mordhau's maps and fight mechanics were terrible when I played.

Chivalry 1 was sold for around $9 ridiculously soon after launch. Anyone buying this on Epic either really loves this game or has no clue they are getting fleeced. I loved Chivalry 1, but there's no way I'm buying this game for over $10.

They're not losing money on the store, they're losing on free games and exclusives. But yeah, build a good client and stop being douchebags and they could compete and win simply by going with 10 points. That's more than fair for all the bandwith and backend stuff.

If the Epic Games Store wasn't trash, they wouldn't need to undercut the competition AND have exclusive distribution. Let gamers buy it on the store they prefer.

Any devs who go Epic-exclusive are dead to me until they give that up, at which point they'll have to then win back my trust... preferably with apologies and offering a really good game or two on sale at a steep discount. As a bonus, by that point the games in question are more likely to be reasonably complete and stable.

Torn Banner developers got into a big argument with Steam users on the Community page and the thread was locked. They kept making arguments that Steam didn't support or care for developers because of their 30% commission and how Epic is now the future because they help fund the game in advance and only take 10%. Failing to comprehend that this is an unsustainable startup strategy to try and grow their book while losing $100's of millions a year. Can't really hate Steam for not doing likewise. If they think Epic is going to keep doing this indefinitely they don't understand how anything works.

If their game isn't on Steam, why are they using the Steam forums to communicate with players? Oh that's right, Epic doesn't have forums. These developers are happy to use Steam's services, for free, while complaining about Steam's larger cut. I wonder why Steam doesn't disable the community features of these games until they actually release on Steam.
Chivalry 2 isn't on Steam and it has no "community features", so there's nothing to disable.

Chivalry 1, however, is on Steam, and people are leaving lovely and relevant reviews for it such as "Traitor Banner Studios", "say no to epic!", "
Taking a dump on your roots with that epic exclusive, that's cool", "Trash company, 1 year epic exclusive for Chiv 2, eat the entirety of my ass Torn Banner Studios."

And people wonder why game developers have taken to despise "gamers", when the most vocal of them are so clueless, entitled, and full of vitriol...

So it's a win/win for the dev at the cost of slightly pissed off customers that fades away by the time it comes to Steam.

Get free money from Epic for game, make money off Epic release, wait for exclusivity to end, make more money on Steam.

Hopefully they aren't that naive and its just them trying to justify taking the Epic cash and defending their sugar daddy. I get the devs taking the easy money to help the bottom line and get their game out but they should just be honest about it.
