Subnautica: Below Zero Leaves Early Access

Subnautica: Below Zero has surfaced from Early Access on Steam, offering Unknown Worlds' sequel to the underwater adventuring of Subnautica. Word is: "Subnautica: Below Zero is a new chapter in the Subnautica universe that will drop players into a freezing underwater adventure, set after the events of the original Subnautica. Below Zero challenges players to survive the icy biomes of an alien planet by crafting tools and scavenging for supplies as players unravel its mysteries." Here's a thread from yesterday with some reviews you might want to check out. A new trailer comes up for air to show off some gameplay, and the announcement explains more:
Subnautica: Below Zero offers players a myriad of new challenges and tools to face them, including the Seatruck and Snowfox vehicles that offer new ways to traverse the frozen seascape. Alterra bases offer more variety than before with new room types and even jukeboxes. A stream of quality of life improvements have also been injected into the game for the official launch and throughout the early access period. New icy biomes above and below the surface encourage players to explore, improve their gear, and discover all corners of the map.

The Subnautica series has been critically acclaimed for its massive open world and immersive gameplay that tests how far players are willing to go in wonder of its ocean world. Subnautica: Below Zero features an all-new story, new land environments to explore, new technology to craft, and treacherous mysteries to uncover.

Yeah, I feel the same way about the food and water. Its just really uninteresting because food and water are super easy to obtain and its never really an obstacle, so all it adds is needless fiddling around with inventory management.

I don't know, a lot of the time I end up finding things and exploring areas more in search of different fish. To each his own I guess, it's such a minor inconvenience and they take up so little inventory space that it was never a big deal to me and added a bit of immersion to the survival experience.

I've been replaying the original Subnautica (never finished it before) but now in VR with a VR improvement mod. Without the mod the inventory is way too close to the face. It's really quite immersive in VR even though it taxes my system like nothing else. I think I'll probably pick this sequel up in the future if I can have a decent experience in VR, with a mod or official support. This series is really worth playing in VR if you have the option.

Yea, what you're describing as "fuck around cutting down trees game" is more of a sandbox survival game, which the Subnautica series definitely is not. There is resource gathering, crafting, etc. but it all serves an ultimate purpose of progressing the story. I think it works out great.

Blooklyn Nine-Nine?

I guess that's in B99 now as well, I was doing more of an Abed, from Community, homage.

More on topic: Any of these survival games, I usually turn off the food/drink thing if that's an available toggle, or use a mod. I've played games with the freezing mechanic too, and that gets old quickly, in my opinion. Oh no, 30 seconds went by, I'm dead... oh wait I am standing near a fire, instantly healed!

To me, although it's all very easy to obtain, it's part of the whole adventure/journey/survival experience in that you have to prepare before going on longer journeys. Doing that properly adds to the illusion/immersion.

You should. I love Subnautica. But as I recall, Subnautica was somewhat buggy out of the gate so I don't think you need to rush to start this one.

I already bought Below Zero during a sale, but I am also going to wait a short while to make sure any major bugs are worked out (as I do with most games these days). However, from what I've read, Below Zero is more of a Subnautica 1.5 than a full sequel. Hopefully all the fixes they added in the first game are already built into the new game. I haven't seen many complaints about any major bugs in the reviews, though I have been mostly skimming to the summary to avoid any potential spoilers.
As far as I know, they reused the engine almost as-is with all the fixes and only added stuff they needed for the story (like freezing weather). I haven't run into any bugs in the 6+ hours I played yesterday.

I am playing on the "No food/water" mode since my experience of the original was vastly improved by not having to constantly eat/drink.

The first Subnautica was one of the coolest gaming experiences ever in vr. Below Zero has a vr mod available, so I've been waiting for the full release to come out before really diving in(pun intended). Although I'm still going to wait a bit longer for patches and whatnot since I still have RE8 to play but can't wait to play this one.
