Out of the Blue

Happy May Day! Today is a second social gathering since getting the COVID vaccine. My softball buddies are all fully inoculated, so we're going to get together. Our general M.O. is to go to a bar in Manhattan, but that felt like a little much for us. Besides, the lockdown caused the permanent shutdown of our favorite watering hole. So one of us is hosting, and it's a nice day, so we can probably spend most of our time outdoors as an extra precaution. Here's hoping many of you are able to safely take such fledgling steps towards normalcy, even if completely back to normal remains a distant dream.

Great film. Pacino and De Niro together. I checked, I do have a DVD of it, but I should probably buy a blu ray version. The scene between the two of them "having coffee" is fantastic. Not sure when I became aware of it. Made in 1995 that would have been the year I got out of the USAF and started what became my final job. I certainly don't recall it being in the theaters or there being much fan fare about it. I guessing I either missed it for one reason or another (like moving across the country) or it didn't get the respect it obviously deserves.

Just went to look at the wiki page, which I have apparently never done before -- didn't know it is based on a true story of someone named Neil McCauley and a detective Chuck Adamson who pursued him. From the wiki:

Detective Chuck Adamson, upon whom Al Pacino's character is largely based, began keeping tabs on McCauley's crew around this time, knowing that he had become active again. The two even met for coffee once, just as portrayed in the film. Their dialogue in the script was based on the conversation that McCauley and Adamson had. The next time the two met, guns were drawn, just as the movie portrays.

Damn cool.

I'm not so sure that would have gone as well with a traditional armored car. That thing had some serious legs.
Well, yes and no. On the one hand a traditional armored car would not have been vulnerable to the small arms fire. On the other hand, if it had been a traditional armored car they wouldn't have attacked without having something more significant than small arms. So... tough to predict other outcomes. The driver was definitely a cool cookie and I suspect very experienced.

if you're interested in a great heist movie (which involves breaking into an armored car), watch michael mann's Heat. it's pretty well known so you've probably heard of it, but just in case you haven't, it's for sure a bucket list movie for any fan of great action flicks. the gun fights are super realistic and well choreographed, it's said the fire and maneuver scenes were shown as an example to military units.

Blue, just want to say that even after complete vaccination you can contract a Covid-19 infection, as happened to my mum and other elder relatives. A benefit of the vaccination appears to be that they are having mild symptoms despite being 70+ with co-morbidities. Also, follow masking and distancing precautions as much as possible, especially when you are outside among people who may not be vaccinated, as you can still be a carrier.

Yeah, what people fail to understand is that it's all about 'viral load'. The vaccine gives you resistance, and your body will easily fight off a low viral load. But if you get hit with a massive load of virus up front, then it takes time for your body to respond with sufficient antibodies. This is why you hear about people getting the flu even after a flu shot, it's just usually not as severe.

-------
It's not only viral load.

India is experiencing what can be referred to as a "double mutation" although that's a misnomer.
The two mutations allow the virus to evade an immune system that's been previously exposed to covid whether through prior infection or possibly vaccination.
But with only 2% of the population being fully vaccinated (10% having had one shot) I don't know if they have enough data to make that call.

We're probably going to masked up for the foreseeable future.

That cash truck driver was amazing. Cool as a cucumber. If you read the article he apparently got way ahead of the crooks, and waited for them with the rifle, but by that point they had had enough. The escort vehicle had been firing on the crooks while this was all going on. I'm not so sure that would have gone as well with a traditional armored car. That thing had some serious legs.

If the stories out of India are true then vector vaccines will not be enough to stop this pandemic anyway. Mask, Test and Distance rules will be our companions for a very long time still.

How come there is no emergency call button in this type of vehicule?
You are definitely right, that whole video is a butt clincher.
Everyone has a cell phone. I doubt an emergency call button bring a faster response, the whole thing was over in less than 3 minutes.
Article says one person from another escort vehicle was fatally shot.

They used their car to stay warm when a winter storm brought down the Texas power grid. In a state that doesn't require carbon monoxide alarms in homes, they had no warning they were poisoning themselves.
...30 minutes later, he found Mersha slumped over in the driver’s seat...Not knowing what else to do, Bekele, a devout Christian, ran and grabbed holy water from inside and splashed it on his wife’s face

Astounding.
