Out of the Blue

As noted above, the 20th anniversary of Tropico is upon us, as the island dictator sim launched on this date in 2001 in Canada and on April 24th in the U.S. Therefore, our desktop view is now adorned by Walter "2" Costinak's logo commemorating the game. Thank you to Scott for renovating it for our current design. And happy anniversary from one El Presidente to another. Enjoy the day with a Presidente cigar, a Presidente beer, or an El Presidente cocktail and maybe settle in and watch some television.

Stoned Pups? all you have to do is read
The dog with a flaming stick in his mouth is a motif known as the “Hound of St. Dominic.”

The woman often depicted with the dog is Saint Jane (or Santa Juana) of Aza, and it is a reference to a vision she had (hence the daydreaming posture). Blessed Jane is said to have dreamed that she was carrying a small black-and-white dog with a blazing torch in its mouth in her womb. When she gave birth to it, the dog ran out and set everything on fire. This vision was interpreted to mean that Jane’s son was going to have an influence that would spread over the whole world.

That whale language article is truly fascinating. It will take them ages though to figure it out, hopefully before Sperm whales go extinct because of humans fucking up their ecosystem.

Yes, of course, there is a reason. Doing it your way would increase the labor costs -- far easier and efficient to package them all at once than to have employees being interrupted from other work to do them individually. Additionally, convenience is king. The customer doesn't have to wait to get an employee's attention and then wait for them to help. Is the additional labor and convenience cost sufficient reason? *shrug*

What the hell are you talking about? No it doesn't. You take the rack put of product, put it in the display, ensure bags and tongs are there and its done. Your way means they're having to go get the boxes, bring them back, assemble the boxes, then put the products in the boxes, label the boxes, stack the boxes on shelves. Your way of doing it costs 10 times as much and takes 10 times as long, and it's 100 times more wasteful.

I agree, plastics are bane and they're everywhere. I hate it when they have a plastic bag inside a cardboard box full of product. Anywho, as far as the boxed item with a window, you could like keep them in bag and put a picture of said product where the column of product is. Business functioned just fine without plastics for centuries. Wax paper, particle board, wood, tin, aluminum, glass, even glass with plastics sandwiched in them would still reduce the amount of plastics. I mean, I get that plastics are super convenient but it's already affecting the health of the planet and now it's affecting animal life health (including humans). Instead of allowing companies to pass the buck on recycling we need to regulate their manufacturing to limit waste or at least use something that will eventually degrade.

I'm starting to think we should shred the plastic and using it for building material or incinerate it for power generation and capture the resultant gases.

Edited for a typo.

In my area they initially had us sorting the paper/plastic/glass/cans. They told us we have to fully rinse all containers and remove lids. If you don’t then your stuff is considered contaminated and is just thrown away.

I toured a local recycling facility for work and sure enough 80% of what was coming in the door was just tossed. Not very efficient.

When a bully challenges the coach of a boxing gym.

They were so friendly at first, I thought it was staged, but the coach really popped that guy. And that guy has obviously had no training. The very first thing my boxing coach taught me was to keep my hands up at all times. You never, ever drop your guard. And you can see the results of fighting a boxer on his terms without training.

Not necessarily. At my local Safeway, all the pastries are kept in the display case and customers grab the ones they want and put them into bags themselves. It operates just the way Cutter wishes it would, and it saves on packaging since people put them in small paper bags.

Recycling works, but it's not magic. As America continues to lead the world in per capita waste production, it's becoming more and more clear that everybody –- manufacturers and consumers — "over-believes" in recycling.

That's odd. To our great shame I always believed that Canada is the most wasteful country on the planet. I know we only recycle something pitiful like 9% of our recyclables. As always it's the lack of leadership unwilling to overhaul the packaging industry. Perfect example...day before last at the grocery store bakery I bought a 4 pack of apple turnovers. These are made in house so it's not like they have to be shipped anywhere. So they put them in those paper boxes - that need to be glued - with the plastic windows glued on. Is there some particular reason that can't just keep them in a display case and put them in a paper bag when someone wants some? That's how it used to work. There's literally countless examples of that sort of needless waste and stupidity.

Ah, well -- when you said in the display, I thought you meant behind a closed glass enclosure. But you are wanting self service baked goods. *shrug* Personally, I rarely buy products available in that way. I trust people about as far as I can throw them, and I don't want any more than necessary having access to my food.

You'd think anyone would read about 4 sentences to "Would it surprise you to know that these paintings are not, in fact, supposed to represent a dog smoking a joint?," but some people neither want to read nor want to have any fun, they just want to write endless paragraphs that miss the point.
