To be fair the game is $60 CAD which is what big box games used to cost us north of the border about ten years ago.

It's still kind of a dick move though.

I will never buy game at FULL price at LAUNCH (as a paid beta tester). Go ahead and make one hit wonder forever. I don't mind. I have enough cheap and FREE games (and i am sure more coming) to play for the rest of my PC gaming live.

I kind of understand the sentiment. The decision to green light a sequel or not is usually made pretty early on, based on the sales to that point. If everyone is waiting until a year later for a sale and then bitching that there was never a sequel, well, tough shit.

The problem is that he assumes that a game only struggles to sell well for one singulair reason, when in reality it's a combination of factors.

I think he's more talking about consumers that complain about no sequel, not talking about games not selling well.

If you're a dev and you're getting angry tweets for not making a sequel, and you can see that enough units sold to warrant one, but not at high enough price points, that's frustrating.

There are endless reasons to not buy full price. I probably only do one a year at full price, tops. But I also don't complain about how Prey didn't get a sequel when I refused to buy it until it hit $7.50.

I remember this game being at the top of the sales charts for three weeks running after it came out. I also remember that I found it to be boring and forgettable compared to Horizon: Zero Dawn, and so I bought that instead. I don't regret that decision. Particularly if it deprived this insufferable windbag a future paycheck.

Yes, and don't complain if regional pricing also makes a sequel not happen! Damned cheapskates in 3rd world countries! Right? Sorry, my apple definitely looked a bit like an orange right now.

Well, I guess we all could counter this argument by saying, Don't whine if you decided to not bring it to the PC in the first place so we could have had the opportunity to purchase the game.

Exactly, and more games means less money to go around. I don't spend as much time on one title as I used to, so why should I spend $60 for every one? A certain number of sales at a lower price should be an integral part of their profit calculations.

Talk about being out of touch. Not everyone can afford to buy every game at full price. And even if they buy it on sale, the developer is still getting SOME money. On that note, I don't feel bad buying used either. The developer already got their cut from that copy.

The reality is that the game just wasn't that great, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either. THAT'S why it didn't get a sequel. Happens to a lot of games.

we live in times where one is expected to work full hours (i get up at 6:00 in the morning an i'm home eleven hours later at 17:00, one week talks and dinner with the wife before she leaves for night watch in a nursing home and one week we have about five hours before bedtime), consume as much as possible and have some balance with their work life. i get by, but many people have it harder than me. they don't have the luxury to think about which game to buy at full price or which one to play. are they expected to buy on release to see if the game is good? fuck that.

He talks Dark Mirror supposedly being pirated. Which admittedly seems completely unrelated to his ranting about people not buying Days Gone at full price. The fact he is no longer associated with the game makes me wonder if this is a revenge thing, just trying to screw over his former employer who he feels did him wrong...

Not once does he mention the game being stolen/pirated/etc. It sounds like (and from brief googling) 2019 was a pretty solid year for games on all platforms, and they had lost a lot of their momentum with being delayed a few times and really missing the Xmas 2018 season. Also doesn't help if your game is given away in PSPlus as well.
We've heard horror stories about dev's missing money milestones by review scores, or units sold.

On second look he does mention piracy for their Siphon Filter PSP game.

It's a pretty interesting article and I'll have to go hunt down the 4 hour interview. But at least the guy was/is honest about what went on, and his personality conflict.
