Tim Sweeney is Really Rich

Forbes estimates that Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is now worth $7.4 billion, which makes him the richest person in North Carolina: "The boost lifts Sweeney, 50, past SAS founder James Goodnight as the richest person in North Carolina. Epic is based in Cary, N.C., and Sweeney is an active land conservationist in the state, where he has bought about 50,000 acres of forest land to keep it from being developed." Here's what's in Tim's wallet:
Epic Games’ crusade against Apple and Google hasn’t scared off investors, as it raised $1 billion this week in a new funding round that valued the Fortnite maker at $28.7 billion. Forbes estimates founder and CEO Tim Sweeney now has a net worth of $7.4 billion, up from $4.7 billion after its previous funding round just eight months ago.

Oh, and by the way -- back to the beginning... how much moves you into "really rich"? Certainly by my calculations Sweeney was "really rich" at $4.7 billion. Do you need to be "own a private jet rich" to be "really rich" or is just a few million enough? I actually probably wouldn't like having billions. Difficult to be unrecognized on the street when you are worth billions. Fame/being famous is certainly something I never cared about or for and definitely something I have no desire to be. So, I'll take the "just a few million" rich, please.

Oh he definitely isn't; see Redeye's post. I'm just saying it's shocking (to me at least) that people are thriving during the pandemic for whatever reason (legitimate or otherwise) while 25% of this country was out of work. Or more. Also, doubling your net worth in less than a year, when it's already in the billions should indicate something is seriously wrong with the world.

I am not trying to attack Sweeney, or at least JUST Sweeney, but billionaires are destabilizing the global economy just by existing at this point.

The same reasons they always get richer during anything that's shit for most...disaster capitalism. Every time there's a plague or a war or natural disaster they're snapping up stock in companies that make money from those things. The only exception here would be Bezos. He simply profited because of the lockdowns and Amazon's business model is perfect to profit from disasters.

If you knew a war(s) were coming - like after 9/11 - and you could afford to buy up a metric fuckton of M.I.C stock that's easy money. Governments around the world have been spending like drunken sailors and, as always, there are billions flowing out there to companies that are completely unchecked and just happen to be friends with said political parties. No bids or anything, just free money. The trick is you have to be liquid enough to afford said stock - a lot of which is very pricey - the rest takes care of itself.

Because money is a finite thing that cannot be generated, right? All our money is divided between a few billionaires and we're left with nothing! XD

That sarcasm out of the way... It is indeed sick that some ppl are so rich they don't know what to do with their money while others die on the street. That's the fault of the "lift yourself up on your own bootstraps" mentality of said rich people, though. That's not a bug in the system.

Yeah we'll I'm never considered the richest man in any state, county, city or street block. He has 7.4 billion more than me. This is a little strange to make this try and not sound like a lot of money to be worth, that's a shit ton. Guy for me it pretty controversial, but he's not all bad by any stretch, way back when it was id vs Unreal most loved him, he wanted to grow to be large, the other guy while still wanting to be very rich didn't seem as dollar driven, doesn't necessarily make either right or wrong.

Y'all can put away those tiny hard-ons pitchforks for Sweeney and how much money he just made.

The top 30 billionaires got richer during the pandemic, number thirty on the list
Lin Bin saw
• Wealth growth during pandemic: +$4.7 billion (+133.6%)

27. David Duffield
• Wealth growth during pandemic: +$6.0 billion

23. Dustin Moskovitz
• Wealth growth during pandemic: +$7.5 billion

12. Eric Yuan
• Wealth growth during pandemic: +$16.8 billion

1. Jeff Bezos

• Wealth growth during pandemic: +$90.1 billion

To be fair, 7.4 billion in any US, European, or Canadian state/province is still a metric fuckton of money that cannot be realistically spent in one person's lifetime.

But more importantly, try to picture gaining 3 BILLION dollars in about 8 months. Now that's really fucking horrifying (for the rest of humanity).

Silicon Valley real estate has been insane for a decade at least, probably longer. San Francisco and Manhattan share roughly the same status. It is all supply and demand, normal capitalism -- I would have thought you would be in favor of that WaltC...

Much of NC is undeveloped wasteland, anyways. Driving from Raleigh to Wilmington is just two hours of nothing.

Better by far than wall-to-wall concrete and asphalt, imo. Property values are so-o-o-o-o-o-o incredibly better than on the West Coast from a buyer's perspective. Have a friend in the "Silicon Valley" area who bought a house there ~50+ years ago--just a little three-bedroom ranch that he bought for about $70K--last appraisal was $1.4 million--he says when he gets tired of paying the taxes on it he's going to sell it and move east and buy a mansion and live like a king...;) He could do exactly that, too. CA these days is the pits, imo. Fabulously overrated, overpriced, and over-taxed. Anyone who can leave is leaving, last I read. I think Sweeney was very smart to stay in NC, actually. The Raleigh-Durham research triangle has a lot to offer and your money goes much, much further than it would in CA, for instance.
It is well known that I don't make mistakes--so, if you should happen across an error in something I have written, you can be confident in the fact that *I* did not write it.
