Can the pump the brakes on the AC franchise for a few years and make me feel the sense of adventure and discovery of like Black Flag?

Considering AAA-games, the AC games are the best of them all every 2 years since Origins. The games are fantastic and I put 80+ hours in all of them. Great bang for the buck.

*snip, but I naturally respect your different opinion on the matter*

Does the main character in Vahalla join the Assassin's beyond the wrist blade? (which I was happy to have back).

I don't remember. I'm that much invested in the "Assassins" narrative Truth be told, I'm not at all. I liked the whole Assassin thing with the wrist blade but after Ezio's storyline I didn't give a shit anymore. The devs also bit some of the wrist-blade fans in the ass by having Eivor ridicule the "practicality" of cutting off the ring-finger. He instead just wore it above his wrist instead of under it, much to the disdain of the actual Assassins.
I loved it.

EDIT/ADD: Yeah, my Eivor is a HE. I loved Kassandra due to her awesome 10/10 voice actress. I tried Female Eivor, and for the life of me I cannot understand anyone playing her. It's like the audio studio told her voice actress to sound like a dude. It makes for an entirely fake "tough" female Eivor.

I'm sorry I have to disagree with you. I thought Origins and Odyssey were/are too big for their own good, and what little I did play of Vahalla was nice to see the Assassin's in the start of the game (and it may get better) but too many bugs and not having any desire to finish Odyssey may have played into it. Maybe they tone don all the stupid sidequest bullshit from those 2 games in Vahalla and go more story and substance (I rather have 1 awesome steak vs 10 mcdonalds burgers). Since Syndicate (still need to finish that one) it has been quantity vs quality (again at least for me and what I have played, again it may be different in Vahalla), I'm having a tough time wanting to go back and revisit the franchise. I'd rather they take a 3 or 4 year approach, and really give me "woah" moments vs "oh look yet another tower to climb and now I can just climb directly right up to instead of having how to get up there like pre-Odyssey games.
They could be doing them in 3's like say AC 1, 2 and 3, or 3, Black Flag and Rogue, and Origins/Odyssey/Vahalla.... *shrugs*

Does the main character in Vahalla join the Assassin's beyond the wrist blade? (which I was happy to have back).

Exactly the same feeling here.

What did you think of the loot system? Odyssey bombed us with loot, most of it waste but much rotation. Instead, every Valhalla loot was few and far in between and targeted a certain play style. The first axe you find, for example, is the same one you use and have upgraded 40 hours later... if that's the axe that complimented your playstyle. Basically, every loot you find in Valhalla is similar to a "Legendary" in all regular RPGs out there. Personally I don't know what I prefer. Maybe somewhere in between.

Black Flag is easily the best of them of all - fun, beautiful, great story. Odyssey and Origins are nice for the historical side of things - the historical tours are awesome! The Ezio trilogy - AC2/Brotherhood/Revelations are my faves behind BF - and amazing if you're a fan of the Renaissance period.

Black Flag added the revolutionary naval combat gameplay to an otherwise terribly boring one-trick pony form of gameplay. Odyssey has the same great naval gameplay and everything else is way more RPG (loot, combat abilities to unlock, etc).

For people who somehow prefer the old AC gameplay over the new approach, Black Flag is the best by far. To me, it was just the AC that let the old AC games go out with a bang.

I think I'm in the minority when it comes to Black Flag. I played it, but couldn't continue. It just got boring for me. Maybe it was too similar to the old style (been-there-done-that effect).

I played AC 1 and 2, and enjoyed that style, but have to agree that Origins and Odyssey really set the bar. I think maybe there was a bit too much content and repetitiveness, but still much better than other open-world games. I think what a lot of people don't realize is that you can still play those games very stealthy. That's the way I play, and it really makes the gameplay a lot more fun. What I don't like is your typical spam&roll combat mechanics. Yes, AC is like that, but you don't have to play that way all they way through. Taking control of forts while evading a bounty hunter is some edge-of-the-seat fun, particularly when in stealth mode.

I haven't played Valhalla yet, but will definitely be playing it at some point.

I loved Valhalla very much, but it missed something which was a huge step back from Odyssey and it defies all reason that it's not in: naval combat.

Naval combat on the open waters is what added the necessary gameplay variety to Odyssey. Without it, Valhalla was the same (albeit great and fun) gameplay for tens of hours which made it a drag sometimes. That being said, I think Valhallas's melee combat is more fun than Odyssey's.

If I decide to try one, which one should I do? Valhalla? Black Flag? Origins?

Odyssey. Without a doubt.

I'd like to second that. Odyssey was the first AC game I truly got hooked on. Granted I haven't played many of them including Black Flag but I've tried 1,2,3, Origins and another one or two of them. I'd say, the newer style they introduced with Origins I prefer and this was greatly improved with Odyssey and I'm sure more improved with Valhalla.

I want to give Valhalla a shot and granted Odyssey was a gorgeous game, it did have some frame drag on my rig because well, my rig is going on 7 years now and showing its age. I've no doubt Valhalla will probably be worst and I prefer to try it in all its glory. Though if you can run it, I'd say go for Valhalla or at least Odyssey. I tried going back to Origin after Odyssey because I heard Origins was the one that started the new style but it was a tad too older including nice conveniences from Odyssey that were missing. So in that respect, if you truly want to deep dive, start with Origins so you don't know about the interface improvements and work your way through them up to Valhalla.

Black Flag is unique and quite good. Origins is probably the best of the revamp in terms of story and design (though admittedly I haven't played Valhalla). I'll also always recommend Assassin's Creed 2 & Brotherhood, it's direct sequel.
