Are they effective? Are hardware bans not spoofable? It's ultimately still just information being sent over the Internet, so I'd imagine there's the same arms race as for cheats and DRM. And it also leaves the Asian net cafe gaming population in the cold.
For mobile phone authentication, I think anyone can get a free VOIP number. If you disallow those (like Microsoft does) then that cuts people out.
But I don't know, I generally don't play online games. Do the top games usually do both of these, and it works fine?
