Diablo II: Resurrected Technical Alpha Plans

Blizzard announces a western version of the recently revealed technical alpha for Diablo II: Resurrected (thanks Blizzplanet). This will run this weekend when a limited number of PC players who have pre-registered on the Diablo II: Resurrected website will be invited on Friday for a test that will run through Monday. For those who miss out, word is there will be at least one additional test before the game is released. There's an outline of what to expect, saying this will include the chance to play through portions of Acts I and II with three classes, the Amazon, the Barbarian, and the Sorceress. There's a FAQ to answer any other questions this news may raise. Here's the overview:
An acclaimed phenomenon, Diablo® II enchanted scores of gamers with addictive hack-and-slash gameplay and an immersive world. Now more than 20 years later the timeless classic is resurrected.

Our journey back to this iconic experience is about to begin. We are pleased to announce the Diablo II: Resurrected Single-player Technical Alpha, the first of multiple tests. As diehard fans, we understand that many of you are itching to return to a game so fondly remembered. Still, we are also thrilled to welcome new players to experience this iconic classic, and we look forward to the feedback you all may share. We want to know if we’re upholding the authenticity of design with our new visuals and quality of life changes.

About two months ago, the legacy of the Dark Wanderer was renewed in all of us when Diablo II: Resurrected was announced at BlizzConline. One of the most popular PC games of all time (and its expansion, Lord of Destruction®) is making a modern resurgence into our lives. We can’t wait for you to see the fearsome demons, brave adventurers, and the world of Sanctuary completely remastered in up to (if compatible platform and equipment is present) Ultra High Definition 4K (2160p) graphics on PC and consoles; while also having the ability to look through the lens of nostalgia by a press of a button.

I guess I was one of the weirdos that liked all 3 Diablos so far.

I thought it was great. Felt very Diablo to me, but with better QOL improvements.

I played more Diablo 3 than the other 2 with expansions combined. All the classes were fun and the QOL was a big improvement over the clunky clickfest of D2 and 1. I liked D2 best but clicking so much killed it for me and once widescreen 1080P became the standard I couldn't play it until that was fixed with the modded versions. The loot drops and how they drop are still the best in D2 and that is why once Resurrected comes out it will probably become my most played Diablo.

The only reason I will buy and play through D2R is for the high confident hopes, that I will finally rid of the D3 memories once and for all. imho, D3 is the worst iteration in AAA franchise history. I don't have any hope for D4, as it is from the same shareholders of company.

I loved Diablo 2, but I probably have almost 1000 hours in the game, vanilla, LoD, and mods. I can't bring myself to spend $40 or whatever to replay literally that same game with updated graphics. I seriously hope you guys that end up getting it enjoy it though, I'm just burned out.

I put an unknown amount of hours into the game but that was around 20 years ago, lol. I think I'm pretty good with enjoying this as if it was fresh again. I'll recall plenty of moments but I'll enjoy them as I get to them again.

Yawn. Graphical overlay for literally Diablo 2 LoD from 15 years ago.

Please bring on Diablo 4!

I bet you think the same thing about Mass Effect: Legendary Edition uh? You should watch a few videos of the changes they made, it's not "just" a graphical overhaul. I can't wait to get back into it and pvp some more.

Like I said, I hope you guys who plan on buying this and other remakes/remasters like it a lot, and get your money's worth, at that.

However, I am going to skip the Diablo 2 remaster, and I am sure as shit going to skip any Mass Effect remasters, lol.

I'm with ya. Diablo 3 is pretty good these days, the latest changes this new season have been welcome. Granted it's essentially power creep, with a little bit of QoL, dressed up as a new feature/update to followers, however the game is going on 9 years old and I'm fine with it. As usual, it's great to play with friends / clan members.

I will probably give D2R a go. My issue is I've spoiled myself with hundreds of hours of Path of Diablo. I am not sure I can just give up all the bug fixes, many quality of life changes, trade site, and the additional end game content the mod offers and go back to 1.14 on what is, at this time, just a graphics update. Auto gold pickup is nice though, even PoD does not have that.

Same here. This damned jungle with its midgets with squeaky voices and those goddamned blowpipes and those witchers reviving them... This is one act I will speedrun through in D2:R.

As much as I would like to see this game come out in a perfect 1:1 remaster there's definitely a lot of QoL issues and bugs even from 1.14b I'd like to see resolved before it's shipped. Increased stash size especially now that it's shared, a charm dump, stackable runes, loot filters and even a hotkey system like PoE/D3. Shorter seasons would be nice too since 6 months is just a bit too long.

Hell, I would even be okay if they did a pass on builds which became broken due to nuclear nerfs like Iron Maiden and Blood Golems.

Gamers are such rubes.

Imagine if today Ford tried selling a 1950 Ford "Resurrected" complete with metal dashboards, non-collapsible steering wheel columns, no airbags, same anemic engine, same shockless iron sping suspension, etc. Only a few die hard nostalgia car nuts would spring for one.

So did I, initially. Then after I finished the game on all the difficulty levels (well TBH even before that) and the "honeymoon" phase wore off it slowly dawned on me how bad the actual game was compared to it's predecessor in almost every single way.
There is a caveat here, I was a hardcore Diablo2 player. Really spent a huge amount of time on battle.net (those were the modem dial-up days) doing all the runs, building PvP characters, Uber Diablo runs, the whole shebang. A game really needs to be special to hold your attention for that long, and it's not like there were other great games that competed for my time in those days. If I were a more casual player, I would have enjoyed D3 a lot more and that's fine I guess. This is the direction that Blizzard wanted to go, but ultimately it was a disappointment for the really hardcore D2 fans among us. We were really vocal about it at that time too, hence the "Fuck those losers" Jay Wilson response and the ensuing memes.

If you haven't tried D3 recently I highly recommend it. It's changed a lot recently. Especially the new seasons can be quite fun.

Hopefully some of the devs on Diablo4 actually play some of it. So they can see how fucked up D3 was and what to do to make D4 a little bit better.
