How about instead we have paper ballots that are machine counted, and a statistically significant number of the paper ballots are hand counted to validate that the machine is accurately counting? In cases of disputes or close elections, all of the ballots can then be hand counted to ensure the candidate with the most votes wins? That sounds more secure to me.
