Watch Dog: Legion Multiplayer Delayed

A tweet from the Watch Dogs: Legion team informs us that the promised multiplayer update for Watch Dog: Legion is going to be delayed. It starts out indicating this will launch as planned on Tuesday, but then follows to indicate the PC release is delayed. Crashes on some GPUs need to be fixed before the PC edition is released. Ubisoft says it will update us "as soon as possible" on when that will happen. The console editions will launch as planned, but the Tactical Op is expected to follow on March 23rd. Here's the tweet, translated from image to text for your convenience, and into upper/lower case from all-caps in an abundance of good taste:
DedSec, we're excited to see new recruits in London when we launch the online mode of Watchdogs: Legion on March 9. Before we launch, we want to make you aware of the few things that have just come to our attention:

  • We've identified an issue in the PC version that can cause the game to crash for players with certain GPUs. The team is working on fixing the issue as quickly as possible, and in the meantime, we've made the decision to wait to launch the PC version until this is fixed. We will communicate the new launch date as soon as possible.
  • We have also identified an issue that can cause the game to crash during the Tactical Op. Therefore we have made the decision to launch it on Xbox, PlayStation, and Stadia on March 23.
  • PlayStation 4/5 will have limited in-game text chat on launch, and we are working on a fix for this, which will be coming on March 23 as well.

We're committed to delivering the best experience to all players and are working diligently to address the issues outlined above. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Not really sure I see your angle Quinn, you saying that it sucks so there won't be anyone to participate in the MP anyways?

Yeah, WD1 was OK and WD2 was good. So there were always at least some players playing SP. Even years later. WD3 sounds so crappy that I can't imagine enough people engaged in the SP campaign to invade. Unless they themselves are searching to invade ppl. But that won't work because it means they are vigilant, quickly aware of any invaders themselves...

Ah, those times I played WD2 and pressed ESC and noticed the game actually didn't pause. I panicked, knowing someone was in there with me. While I was just about to grab a coffee IRL! Such a revolutionary adrenaline rush.

The game where you can be anybody... but its easier not to bother with. You just unlock a construction guy, fly around the country, unlocking all areas, scooping up all tech, and gg. Sure there are other gimmick characters but depends on how you want to play the game. There really is not much character "investment" here. They can't level up or anything. Sure you can be a "granny assassin" and while that is cool, for the current SP game pointless.

The MP... really? Feels like an anthem is coming up. I mean this is not RDR or GTA (or Cyberpunk). But for those of you wanting it, I hope they deliver. Just not for me. Maybe one day I'll finish the SP.

This is a game that should have been in my wheelhouse. I loved WD2, warts and all, and have played it multiple times.

WD:L just left me bored. Here are the reasons:

1. Since nearly everyone can be "recruited" there's no reason to get attached or interested in any one character. Ergo, the overarching plot moves apace and you, the player's role in it, feels like nothing more than window dressing. You're just along for the ride which robs you of any sort of agency.

2. The dialog. Holy shit that dialogue. I had never previously heard the words "bruh", "breh", and "cuz" so frequently in such a short span of time. Marcus, Sitara, Wrench, Josh, and Eric could play off of one another and they each had their own distinctive characteristics that led to some fun and enjoyable moments. Like Wrench and Marcus' discussions of the Predator versus the Xenomorph on your way to do a mission. WD:L has none of that and it makes the characters within it feel hollow and two dimensional. Because of that, the dialog is generic, bland, and feels like it was written by someone who is learning English as a second language who doesn't yet understand nuance and subtext.

3. The world is unbelievably boring. This is in large part due to the AC influence in all Ubi games. "Let's cram the map with hundreds of 'objectives' but those objectives are one of only four types." So they become rote and boring. They become a hassle because they have to be completed to progress the story but there's nothing truly meaningful about completing them. They're gatekeepers instead of actual milestones of skill progression.

4. The story line has become cliched. "Corporations bad! Government bad! Must hack ALL THE THINGS to save the world!" All three WD had the same core story line and all they have done is change the set pieces for each release. How about having DedSec go up against hostile Russian and/or Chinese hacking groups that are leaking and abusing the PII of the average person? DedSec is supposed to be fighting for the people, right? So why not have them take the fight to the hackers that are doing far more harm to the people for a change? Then you could have DedSec pitted against state sponsored groups where the actual hacking skill matters.

WD:L ended up being a solid, disinterested "meh" from me after about twenty hours in.

Pretty sad how this core feature continually gets sidelined, looks like it's finally ready to come out at least, wonder if anyone cares at this point? I mean the playerbase has got to be a shadow of its peak at launch...

And to my understanding the game itself is such utter shit, nobody wants to play it either way. So MP is cool and all but without anyone to invade in their single-player enjoyment, MP can die in a fire for all I care.
I received Watchdogs Legion with my graphics card and gave it a go. The intro was pretty decent and the visuals are great—the raytracing is actually noticeable unlike in a lot of other games—but as soon as it threw me into the open world I completely lost interest. The gameplay mechanics were not intuitive to me and nothing made me want to keep playing.

Maybe it's one I'll come back to and enjoy but it's not high on my list of games to give another go.

Ionno, Watch Dogs 2 limped along just fine for years with a small online base, and it was still fun for general sandbox "GTA-style" fuckery. That's all I'm looking for.

The game was made by Ubi Toronto, and not their main Ubi Montreal studio that did WD2 and I think WD1. It has its problems, but has inherited enough satisfying fun systems form the previous titles that it's still lots of fun IMO, *When MP is present. I'm still waiting to do the SP campaign, not gonna do it alone, that's boring. Doing SP and getting invaded is fun, and adds another dimension to the traditional Ubi-style SP slog.

Does make me miss WD2 tho, played through it 3 times already so i'm pretty done with it, first playthrough was so great though, still one of the most fun games I've played in a long time.

BTW, that's a good Sam Harris episode, been following that guy for a long time now, since the Hitchens days.
