Valheim Hits Five Million Vikings

The milestones just keep coming for Valheim, as a post on Steam announces the Viking survival game has now sold more than five million copies since its release a month ago (thanks Jaysen). Here's what developer Iron Gate says about the achievement:
You’ve done it again! As you are reading this, the Valkyries have ferried more than FIVE MILLION souls to Valheim to uncover ancient treasures, sail savage seas and secure the tenth norse world.

During the little time you’ve spent in Valheim, all five million of you managed to:

  • Spend more than 15,000 years playing Valheim
  • Watch more than 35 million hours of gameplay Twitch
  • Pushed us to number 39 in the best user reviewed games on Steam of all time
  • Made our five-person strong team excited to come to work (virtually) each and every single day (that’s one person per million sales, by the way!)

We watch with pride and excitement, and struggle to find the right words to express our gratitude to you, the community. Exciting new milestones lie ahead, and we for one cannot wait to show you more of the game as we journey through our 2021 Roadmap.

May Frey bless you with a plentiful harvest, and may Heimdall watch over your settlement. Oh, and if you see an oversized mosquito, run.

Since Valheim is supposed to take place in the Norse afterlife, wouldn't it technically be 20 million DEAD Vikings?

It's almost like playing Assassins' creed: Valhalla on a PS 1 ..... still kinda fun but brutal on the eyes.

Aside from the pixelated textures and low-poly models, the environments, lighting, weather effects and atmosphere of the world is actually quite beautiful. It makes exploration (and setting up a little base or outpost for portals) in the game a great, fun experience (especially with friends).

Why does that remind me of Asheron's Call?

I picked this up last week and rather enjoyed the 5 initial hours I spent playing it. I'll certainly go back to it again once I've tired of Fallout 76 (which seems to be fairly decent now). It's that old problem of too many Steam games and not enough time.

Yeah the game looks beautiful... I guess some people really just care about polygon counts and texture resolutions.

The storms and sunsets and oceans and forests are great! Mist rolling in and sitting around on the low lying land.

It's well deserved. Valheim is a great little game. It brings me back to my days in Ultima Online of all things, with a super open-world layout and game play focused on discovery (both of new lands and of new ways to create things).

It's just too bad it looks that old. At least with games like Conan Exiles it actually looks great. A decade ago I would have been in like Flynn on this, now, not so much.

Yes, Conan looks great and had LOTS of potential but instead of the dev's actually adding content and improving their game, all they do is add new skins and DLC's.

On the other hand Valheim is going the opposite route... adding more CONTENT, depth, gameplay improvements and meaningful changes.

I know which one i'll take.

I wish they'd improve the walking/running animation though, that's about my only real gripe around 'graphics' TBH.

You do realize this was a developer choice to go with these graphics right? With mod support there will be high end texture packs coming. I'm fine with how it looks for now, looking at stuff from distance though does look extremally nice.

Turn off depth of field to help the visuals. I can't say that they have ever bothered me though, the game has a good art style that makes up for a lot.

It was. Although back then, it was called "PK," "PKer," "Player Killer," or "Player Killing." Origin had dedicated servers for always-on PVP. I played on the non-PVP shards.

PVP is supported, but right now they don't have a setting which forces it on (players manually toggle it). Some servers make it mandatory with admin enforcement, but then there's also the current max player count of 10...

It's a trade-off, the intentionally low-fi art style (models and textures) allow them to have way nicer special effects and physics than games like Conan. If you prefer that superficial beauty which looks good in screenshots yet feels much more dull in actual gameplay, that's fine, but the more you harp on Valheim looking old, the more you prove your ignorance on the subject.

That's exactly what I like about it. It plays just like a golden era game. And I can understand people who don't like the graphics because they're definitely at the indie level budget. But honestly, that doesn't bother me because the enjoyment overshadows any of the graphics and audio limitations (e.g. I had to turn off the music because it doesn't really match the gameplay, imo).

Ultima Online was actually the first thing it reminded me of once I started playing too. I'm not sure what it is that gives it that feeling, maybe the way you chop trees, or it could be the skill system, or cooking. Either way, I like it, and hope they continue to build on that feeling!

Great game.

I hope the success reveals a new, updated roadmap of cool things to come.

As fun as it is, its easy to forget that its early access, and there are still lots of little minor nuances that Id like for them to improve upon.
