AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT Unveiled

Today AMD teased its new Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics cards. These theoretically go on sale for USD$479 in two weeks, though of course managing to beat out the scalpers and cryptocurrency miners will be a tall task. AnandTech offers the details:
Overall, today’s event from AMD was a bit less than a full reveal, but a bit more than a teaser. AMD isn’t offering a complete technical work-up about the RX 6700 XT two weeks before its launch – if only to have something left to showcase on the 18th – however the company has disclosed the most important points about the card. With 40 CUs, 12GB of VRAM, and a surprisingly high game clock, the RX 6700 XT is a natural fit for AMD’s lineup, paring down their RDNA2 hardware to something more appropriate for the 1440p gaming market that AMD will be targeting.

As rival NVIDIA’s own launch cadence has been a couple of months ahead of AMD’s, AMD once again gets the advantage of knowing well in advance how their latest part will compare to its green competition. For all practical purposes, the RX 6700 XT will be going up against NVIDIA’s own 1440p anchor card, the $499 GeForce RTX 3070. Compared to its rival, the RX 6700 XT will be landing with more memory (12GB vs. 8GB) and, interestingly, a slightly lower $480 price tag. According to their presentation, AMD believes that they’ll trade blows with the RTX 3070, but the decision to undercut NVIDIA is a sign that we shouldn’t expect the two cards to be perfectly matched.

and the scalpers... for fuck's sake

The only reason the scalpers can get away with it is because almost every single GPU produced goes straight to miners without even going through retailers.

There are orders of 10's of millions of $ worth of GPUs going directly to Nvidia and AIBs happening all the time. They take priority before retailers. What little is left gets scalped.

The minute those die down, the scalpers won't be able to scoop up all the availability and their party will be over quick.

I get what you're saying, but the get-rich-quick insanity around cryptocoin isn't going anywhere.

It's always going in cycles, we get a new cycle, it'll turn out the same way older cycles did, boom and bust.

Buying a GPU in 2021 is kinda pointless TBH, unless you're desperate for an upgrade the best thing to do is wait til the cryptocraze dies down.

I get what you're saying, but the get-rich-quick insanity around cryptocoin isn't going anywhere. Especially when the popular ones are all being manipulated now. I don't think these miner jokers even know you can buy mining devices in most cases, and the scalpers... for fuck's sake, the scalpers.. every possible item is being scalped/profiteered/middle-manned/bought up and resold because.... capitalism? It's fucking maddening.

I won't be supporting any scalpers, but I'm definitely at least attempting to build a new desktop in 2021. The plan was all AMD, but we'll see what's actually available in 6 months, I guess.

What pisses me off are the manufacturers not reserving cards for people. I emailed MSI about it, never heard back from it. That's how much they care.

Clearly a typo, it should say "card" not "cards"
All 2 of them

Because there won't be more than that for sale anywhere.

I think I'll ride my 1080 for this year, but upgrade my CPU/MOBO/RAM.
I'm still running an r7 1700 stock with 16gigs of RAM.

Yeah, my interest in the new cards is gone. They effectively don't exist, so why be interested? I'll scoot along fine on my gtx1080. Maybe by the time they release the RTX 4000 line, I'll finally be able to see a 3080 in person.

both AMD & Nvidia literally sending out 20x video cards total a month..... telling us in 1 press release that demands won't be met until maybe end of year & then next press briefing on another new cards being 'released' ...

I'd like to see actually equivalent benchmarks vs. the 3070, is that too much to ask?

Also, these manufacturers should make you have to call up to buy one, or someway somehow make it so we can buy one.
Sure, they are selling them handover fist to mining companies, but at some point the gaming world is going to be in a corner with games they cant make or dont make to a level, because we're all rocking 4 generation old tech and cant play their game.

It's frustrating that AMD is pricing to the market (probably exceeds legitimate gamers) and not to how this generation of cards actually performs. I would buy a 6800 at $500. It's never going to go close to that, but that's what it's worth if you are not a miner or scalper. Looks almost certain that I'm going to have my ($600) 1080TI for another generation.

Uh, if they're priced like a 3070 (2080 Ti equivalent), why are they comparing their benchmarks with the 1070 and 2080 Super?

Why even bother with these paper launches? Wake me when cards actually start showing up in volume and MSRP or lower.

You'll be waiting for that for a long time.
