The thing so many of these Alien games and even a few of the movies get all wrong is they show waves of waves of aliens, when the game or movie never establishes where/how enough potential human hosts were available for that many face huggers to leave the egg and plant baby aliens in the humans chests.
As far as the movies are concerned there is only Aliens (which I consider canon), and in that movie we have 158 workers listed plus their families. No idea how many in total there were. We must also assume that they had some livestock which could also potentially increase that number. I'd say a conservative estimate is around 200 people in total. We have no idea if Weyland-Yutani shipped in people in cryotubes for experimentation once the derelict ship was found, but let's assume they didn't. Let's also assume that some aliens were "fragged" by the colonists, I think a very generous estimate of 50 sounds about right. That still leaves some 150 or so Aliens for the marines to face when they arrived at Hadley's Hope.
