DOOM Eternal Earned $450M in Nine Months

The LinkedIn Profile of David S. has some sales information about DOOM Eternal, as the Product Manager at Gearbox Publishing lists a previous position as "monetization designer" at id Software (thanks PCGamesN). He cites SuperData as the source for saying the first-person shooter sequel generated $450 million in its first nine months:
Product Management Lead for id Software products. Responsibilities included product KPI development, game monetization, economy, analytics, feature specs, feature roadmaps, and more. One major focus was on Doom Eternal, which generated over $450m in revenue in the first 9 months of release (per Superdata public information).

That's pretty impressive; I should go back and finish that game at some point. I got to some jumping puzzle area and haven't played since.

How are they making that money? DLC?

Yeah those parts of the game are garbage. I have a love hate relationship with Doom Eternal. The combat, is just fantastic. But the level design, jumping puzzles, and the fact that it looks almost exactly like Warframe bothers me, a lot.

Yea I wish Doom Eternal looked more horror-like, in general I felt OP in the game and didn't like the neon interface. Everything else about the game I loved though and beat it. I don't know how they made $450M though there wasn't much to do after you beat it.

What? Almost half a billion dollars on 1 game in 9 months?

I had no clue there was enough content to even buy to keep it going like that. I still haven't beat it yet. It's one of those where I'm in the mood at times, progresses, then puts it down and I don't touch it again for weeks, lol.

It's a $60 game... Depending on how the discounts and DLC factored in, this might represent around 10-15M copies sold. The DLC never showed up on the Steam Top 10 so, at least on PC, it probably wasn't much of a factor.

Assuming the figure is even accurate, of course. I haven't seen any data from Bethesda's own mouth since it was said to set a franchise record for opening week. This guy's LinkedIn profile has been hidden or deleted already.

All they had to do was get rid of that idiot carmack, who thought jump scares were a thing for doom 3.
He forced out others trying to correct him, now hopefully that he's gone for good.

Can't tell if this comment is sarcasm or completely braindead, Carmack is one of the biggest contributors in gaming history and possibly a genius.

Well then consider it braindead if you wish.
It seems you really have a low bar for
biggest contributors in gaming history and possibly a genius.

His "so called genius" was pretty heavily cracked since doom 3 and beyond.
He basically made an engine with so many layers of mapping, any engine designer could have done it.
It ran like such a piece of shit, I don't think the networking multiplayer ever got fixed.
Loosely quoting here, his "so called genius" also publicly stated "he didn't care what customers/fans wanted, he made what he wanted."
When half of id tried to explain "jump scares" were a thing of the past during doom 3 development, he basically bought all their shares and fired them.
Then, thankfully he started playing with his rockets. At least keeping him out of the gaming industry has been a big boon, regardless of your fan worship.
He deserved to be fired, I can only hope he never comes back to gaming. There's too many sociopaths in the industry.

Carmack is a technical force with his work on 3d engines, but the guy isn't a game designer. The best games id made had very simple game mechanics. It worked well for a while, but whenever they branched out, it was miss after miss. Carmack leaving gaming was probably a good thing.

Last week finished and was blown by Doom 3 BFG, The Lost Missions and Resurrection of Evil, all in VR thanks to the Fully Possessed Mod that built on the groundwork already made by John Carmack.

Even though somewhat dated, it was absolutely fantastic.
I recall only 1 (one) place I had to jump twice to cover some 3 or 4 meters.
Also find Acleacius' posts off the mark.

Anyway thanks to John, I believe gamers owe him forever (shareware, deathmatch -local and online playing-, liberating source code of games, great strides in VR, his good attitude and caring for us the gamers).

Uh, John Carmack wasn't fired from iD and he's still in the game industry, albeit in VR.

Do you have any source of the things you just said? Also are you sure you aren't mixing him up with Adrian Carmack (who was forced out of the company and sued his former partners)?

Carmack is a legend for a reason. He was the programmer behind Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake. All revolutionary titles for technical, programming reasons. Seriously, no one did work on his level until the Unreal engine came along. Even with 2D gaming, his Commander Keen engines turned heads because PC hardware didn't have the 2D sprite handling capabilities built-in the way consoles had at the time.

And seriously, how would him being out of the industry be a "boon" for the industry? No single person is that influential in gaming, especially considering that he is a PROGRAMMER and not a DESIGNER.

I agree with you, but I don’t know that I would say ‘even’ in regards to his 2D development history. His work was absolutely revolutionary in the world of 2D graphics as well.

I loved the 2016 reboot, but Eternal sucks imo. Basic gameplay loop is 70% Painkiller, 30% platforming. I prefer Doom gameplay.

What a wild summary of John Carmack lol
"The thing he was most passionate about in life was jump scares and I hate him for it."
"He made an engine with a lot of layers, big whup."

Also John Carmack left Id in November 2013, to dedicate himself to VR till 2019.
So had nothing to do with Doom 2016 nor Doom Eternal jumps, haha.

He always was a genius programmer doing engines nearly alone.
Later whole companies took the torch.

Though he may have proposed designs or not, he never was a designer, and doubt he had the time for that.

So, Acleacius, come clean man, what have you been consuming, ah ?

Yup. This.

If these sales figures are true, it's another reason to grow bitter. Doom Eternal was the dumbest shit I've played in years. The rock-paper-scissors combat, incredibly ridiculous circus of a level design and non-existent story unless you read the fucking codex...

But apparently most people just want pew pew again. The Painkiller devs should capitalize on this asap.

Totally disagree. I loved DOOM 2016 and I worship ETERNAL. There are so few jump 'n run sequences that I can barely remember them and yet people complain about them.

Lol what? The entire maps are designed around ridiculous movement. The maps consist of arenas not unfamiliar to the circus acrobat's eye, and between arena A and B there's some dumb jump/climb/hang sequence that connects the two of them.
