Carmack did some really great work up until the megatexture fiasco. He made a few mistakes along the way like betting on the wrong horse with OpenGL (a real turd of an API), but when megatextures didn't work out it seemed like the right time to hang it up.
And yet he still continued to make important contributions to VR, most notably with timewarp. Too bad he sold his soul to the devil (Zuck).
John Carmack's support of OpenGL, as well as Gabe Newell's support of Linux (failed Steam Machines, very useful Proton) were judiciously applied and successful measures in stopping Microsoft's plan of a Directx walled garden (a la Apple).
John Carmack's was instrumental in the success of Vulkan, a branch derived from the "real turd" OpenGL.
Gaming is much better now by having choices and not being constrained to a unique closed proprietary API.
Some unknown game studies opted for using it, wasting their time https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_Vulkan_gameshttps://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_OpenGL_games
