DOOM Eternal Earned $450M in Nine Months

The LinkedIn Profile of David S. has some sales information about DOOM Eternal, as the Product Manager at Gearbox Publishing lists a previous position as "monetization designer" at id Software (thanks PCGamesN). He cites SuperData as the source for saying the first-person shooter sequel generated $450 million in its first nine months:
Product Management Lead for id Software products. Responsibilities included product KPI development, game monetization, economy, analytics, feature specs, feature roadmaps, and more. One major focus was on Doom Eternal, which generated over $450m in revenue in the first 9 months of release (per Superdata public information).

No the stuff of infants is to say the game is horrible and everyone is conspiring to make it sound like a great game and bots are at work when pretty much every review both from players and professional reviewers say the game is good.

The stuff of an adult would be to say that the game is not for you. Not that it sucks ass and act like that is objective.

I agree, which is why, as an adult (vs when I was younger), I try to frequently qualify my opinion with "in my opinion" or "to me."
Otherwise, it sounds like you're making a statement of objective fact.

Saying "only an idiot likes that game" or "that game is for idiots" is insulting in any case. But sometimes, well, Justin Bieber makes music for idiots and preteen girls. I'm ok with that being a statement of fact. But, in my opinion, Terraria is a dull game that isn't much fun. Knowing how adored that game is, I won't just say it sucks. It just isn't a game made for me.

I understand there are quite a few mods for Eternal. I'm hoping there'll be something to tweak Eternal's gameplay to more closely approach 2016's level. Although with the map design being more vertical it can only go so far.

Seriously those are at best written by tweens.
But more likely bots.

So all the games that you do like that are reviewed favorably...those reviews are written by tweens and bots as well? And I mean Steam has to be in on it because you can only review with an actually unlocked game and this one is Denuvo protected and so someone bought 98,000 copies of this game just to spam the review area with bots and so nothing is ever actually reviewed honestly on Steam.

Wow...you figured it out. The whole world is a conspiracy to make people like games that you hate. Whatever will you do? Its not like anyone can ever have a differing opinion.

Effort would have been much better spent creating an entirely new open API much earlier on instead of trying to make OpenGL work. That was an expensive mistake that lasted for many years and generated a lot of collateral damage.

John Carmack's support of OpenGL, as well as Gabe Newell's support of Linux (failed Steam Machines, very useful Proton) were judiciously applied and successful measures in stopping Microsoft's plan of a Directx walled garden (a la Apple).
John Carmack's was instrumental in the success of Vulkan, a branch derived from the "real turd" OpenGL.
Gaming is much better now by having choices and not being constrained to a unique closed proprietary API.

He forced out others trying to correct him, now hopefully that he's gone for good.

id games have been about intense multiplayer since doom original.

Doom3 single player design was thoroughly 'whatever' - like every id game ever.

Multiplayer was great. The pacing was super quick compared to other fps games at the time.

The only real downside was that it didn't have a tutorial that forced people to learn movement. MP lobbies were chock full of people 'running' around the map, screaming "hacker" at anyone bunny hopping circles around them.

It was a harbinger of the times. It illucidated just how arena shooter skills were gone from the general fps gaming population, and the skills weren't even recognizable to most players as anything other than hacking. 95%+ of players wandering like cripples made it clear the MP would fail.

And yet Candy Crush made much more money. Candy Crush must be an amazing game, right? Like the best games and movies make the most money, right?

Really, I didn't like Doomkey Kong either. Good that the game made some money, though. But unless they make Doom more like Doom again, I'm out of the franchise and play e.g. Prodeus instead.

Steam reviews will highly rate anything that isn't a buggy mess. Nah, the game isn't fun (for me). Once I saw the flying fireball chains from Mario I was out. The game was just barely treading water with me up to that point with all the platforming. That said, I was also a little lukewarm with Doom 2016 (which is why I bought Eternal at a steep discount) which overused (or rather abused) the monster arena trope. I'll stick with classic Doom and/or Brutal Doom.

Yup. This.

If these sales figures are true, it's another reason to grow bitter. Doom Eternal was the dumbest shit I've played in years. The rock-paper-scissors combat, incredibly ridiculous circus of a level design and non-existent story unless you read the fucking codex...

But apparently most people just want pew pew again. The Painkiller devs should capitalize on this asap.

Totally disagree. I loved DOOM 2016 and I worship ETERNAL. There are so few jump 'n run sequences that I can barely remember them and yet people complain about them.

The jumping portions weren't puzzles, because they were dead easy. They were just kind of satisfying, because the mechanics actually felt good. Even more, they were mostly there to teach you how to use the mechanics, which ended up being very useful during battle. Dashing was huge in big fights.

And the fights were all satisfying as hell.

I have issues with the game. I do think they took ammo down too much. That they put too much in. I didn't need 2 grenades and a flamethrower, because it added way too many buttons you needed to think about using. They really didn't need a plot. The deeper the plot got, the worse it was. All we needed was demons from Hell, and some guy that, for some reason, is the perfect weapon against them. Backstory was bad.

But all that was ignorable (well, maybe not always the flame thrower.) The core of the game was really, really, really fun. The game does such a good job of making you feel like a demon killing god.

Lol what? The entire maps are designed around ridiculous movement. The maps consist of arenas not unfamiliar to the circus acrobat's eye, and between arena A and B there's some dumb jump/climb/hang sequence that connects the two of them.
