Illinois Bill Seeks to Ban Violent Video Games

The Chicago Sun-Times reports efforts by an Illinois state legislator to ban the sale of violent video games, with a seeming particular focus on the depiction of car-jackings, such as those seen in Grand Theft Auto. Rep. Marcus Evans Jr. has introduced a bill introduced seeking to expand a state law banning the sale of violent video games to minors into a ban the sale of games to anyone if they depict "psychological harm," including "motor vehicle theft with a driver or passenger present." If this passes into law, there's a good likelihood it will end up being ruled unconstitutional when tested in court, as such efforts always seem to end up running afoul of the right to free speech found in the first amendment of the Constitution. Here's word:
With carjackings on the rise in Chicago and elsewhere, a South Side Democratic state representative has introduced a bill that would ban the sale of Grand Theft Auto and other violent video games.

Rep. Marcus Evans Jr. wants to amend a 2012 law preventing some video games from being sold to minors. Friday, he filed HB3531, which would amend that law to ban the sale to anyone of video games depicting “psychological harm," including "motor vehicle theft with a driver or passenger present."

All of you gun toting fanatics should just go out into the streets and shoot it out with the assholes who want to ban video games. I have a strange feeling that it would be a pretty fair fight as far as armaments are concerned.

None. The guy that proposed it is heavily involved in anti-carjacking stuff. Hence where this came from. If you have family members killed in a grand theft auto, then GTA may be kind of horrifying to you.

But that doesn't mean it should be banned. I don't know if this guy believes it should be, or if this is symbolic, or just grandstanding. But it has zero chance of passing. Less than zero. As others mentioned, it would almost definitely be killed by the SC.

I played GTA V for 2 weeks and thought I was ready. But time before last when I jumped in someone's car I realized I forgot my mouse so couldn't go anywhere. But last time I remembered my mouse but no matter how much I pressed the left mouse button the car would not accelerate. Im stymied.

EDIT: OHhhhh its my keyboard. Silly me. I will take my keyboard with me next time. Im sure it will work.

However, not in the way this bill addresses. This bill is asinine and wrong headed.

The ones that do typically show an increase in short-term aggression and a violent video game. Meaning someone gets "fired up" from playing them and might roughhouse siblings or something. None of them have proven any long-term connection between violence and video games.

And they show normalizing. Like how we know, conclusively, that smoking in movies increases smoking overall.
So, as you said, it can either raise energy, or normalize small acts of violence. Grand theft auto is not a small act of violence. There are absolutely isolated incidents of some idiots seeing something big and stupid and violent somewhere, thinking it's cool, and doing it. Those copycats were primed and would be set off by anything. They weren't good people going bad, they were bad people that were going to do a bad thing, regardless. Which is why this is so stupid.

Fight Club led to more violence in that it inspired fight clubs (or friends deciding to try a fist fight), which were consensual and mostly harmless. It normalized bad sunglasses. It did not lead to anyone bombing banking/credit buildings (plus, we all know now you need to go after the data in the cloud!)

Does Grand theft Auto sell a different version in Chicago than the rest of the United States.
That would explain it.

Yep. The law currently prevents some games being sold to minors; this bill is to expand the law to prevent them being sold to anyone.

Presumably, this law will only apply to retailers operating in Illinois. Evans is going to flip out when he hears about digital delivery platforms.

The current law is completely inoperative since SCOTUS has already declared such laws unconstitutional.

"...a bill that would ban the sale of Grand Theft Auto and other violent video games."

and

"preventing some video games from being sold to minors."

are quite different things. The former is government censorship and generally a bad idea, the latter is a sensible option. Parents will still be able to buy the games for their kids and it should be their responsibility to check what they are playing. Regardless, the law is probably largely irrelevant as kids can get their hands on the games if they want to. An easier option is to put an age restriction option on the console itself.

That being said, the sentence "With carjackings on the rise in Chicago and elsewhere, a South Side Democratic state representative has introduced a bill that would ban the sale of Grand Theft Auto and other violent video games." is rather ridiculous as there is no correlation between these two things as far as I know. If anything I would assume having these games would lower the incidents of carjackings by minors.

Maybe the government should try to tackle poverty, poor family structures and lack of education before looking for scapegoats for their own failings.

I guess video games needs its own constitutional amendment:
