If the rover wasn't built, there is nothing which would magically cause the Congress to spend that money on the homeless and hungry instead. They are separate issues and not linked in any way, except they both require action by Congress.
No, it's the right answer. A few billion houses and feeds a lot of people. 3 billion dollars to send a toy to Mars. And you're completely fine with that while your fellow countrymen freeze and starve? Are you fucking kidding me? What is wrong with you? Such a typical American answer.
I've got zero problem with space exploration...so long as it's not taxpayers wasting dime one on it. Until poverty is eliminated it's a luxury that isn't necessary.

Buzz! Wrong answer.
The building of the rover didn't in any way prevent the government from helping those people. The US federal budget outlays exceed 4 trillion dollars. A few billion for a Mars rover isn't even a drop in the bucket. The problem with assistance to homeless and hungry Americans is far more political than it is budgetary.

Pretty sweet vid. Amazing they could get that resolution transmitted back to Earth.

I'm guessing BoP meant he watched the live landing coverage.
