No, it's the right answer. A few billion houses and feeds a lot of people. 3 billion dollars to send a toy to Mars. And you're completely fine with that while your fellow countrymen freeze and starve? Are you fucking kidding me? What is wrong with you? Such a typical American answer.

I've got zero problem with space exploration...so long as it's not taxpayers wasting dime one on it. Until poverty is eliminated it's a luxury that isn't necessary.
You are missing the point. I'm saying the only thing preventing help from going to the homeless and hungry is the US Congress passing the legislation. If the rover wasn't built, there is nothing which would magically cause the Congress to spend that money on the homeless and hungry instead. They are separate issues and not linked in any way, except they both require action by Congress.

Buzz! Wrong answer.

The building of the rover didn't in any way prevent the government from helping those people. The US federal budget outlays exceed 4 trillion dollars. A few billion for a Mars rover isn't even a drop in the bucket. The problem with assistance to homeless and hungry Americans is far more political than it is budgetary.

I think this falls under Carlans Schools vs stadiums.

You might as well build the stadium, because the schools will still suck.
Might as well go to mars, the homeless will be here if you do or you don't.

Pretty sweet vid. Amazing they could get that resolution transmitted back to Earth.
Here's the data transmission rates for the Mars Curiosity rover. I wasn't able to find the info for Perseverance.
https://mars.nasa.gov/msl/spacecraft/rover/communication/
My guess is the transmission rates from the orbiters back to Earth are very similar.

The statement was confusing. After a moments thought i understood what he probably meant, but others obviously didn't.

It could have also meant that he'd watched it earlier yesterday when NASA had a news conference and broadcasted it live.

Living the last 5 years in a post-truth period has oversensitized me a tad.

I watched it live but it was absolutely worth watching it again.
Implies that the same thing was watched.
If I said I watched the fly episode of Breaking Bad when it aired and recently watched it again on Netflix, you could safely assume that I watched the same thing both times.
And I can safely assume that it would suck just about as much as it did the first time.

I'm guessing BoP meant he watched the live landing coverage.
The live landing coverage did not contain any of the video as it took this long to transmit it back home.

I can't decide if you're just a glutton for punishment or simply ignorant. You are attacking a space program, which is literally looking for traces of life on another world, while at the same time the same country that is responsible for said program, spends trillions every year on the biggest military budget in the world, cuts taxes for the very rich, has little to no social welfare programs, has no social health care etc. etc. etc.

Out of all of those things, you want to cut the one thing it's doing right, and use that money to feed the poor?

Just like Canada's homeless and hungry natives (not to mention other Canadians) that your country, government, and culture happily ignore agree with Canada's space efforts in conjunction with NASA?

My wife's friend's husband (both Canadians living in the US) has a great saying when it comes to Canadians attempting a "holier than thou" attitude: "Don't complain about the smell of pig shit coming from your neighbor's farm when the chicken shit on your own smells just as bad or worse."

Americans are too fat anyway. If they're willing to brave the cold to keep the government out of their electricity generation, then they can go a few days without food so we can land on Mars.

Do I need a /s here?
