Valheim Passes 500K Concurrent Players

Steam Game and Player Statistics Page shows a new milestone for Valheim, as the Viking survival game had over 500K concurrent players over the weekend (502,387 to be precise). IGN this is the fifth highest peak count, trailing just PUBG, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. This also this makes Valheim the most popular survival game ever on Steam, topping the 489,886 concurrent players Terraria achieved in May 2020 following the launch of the game's final update.

Hey Sepharo, did they ever get the netcode and tick rate to the point that it felt good? I played through the first netcode fix and was far from impressed....with the amount of revenue they were generating they could have done so much better. That said, it was still a blast to play. It was easily the best BR on the market. If they had invested more into netcode/tick/anticheat, I could easily see myself still playing today.

I wouldn't feel right commenting on the feel since I don't really play it.
I'm one of these weirdos who watch more games than I play and PUBG was/is one of the best to watch.
Games are of a nice length, slow enough pace to easily tell what's going on and allow the streamer to comment and describe their thought process etc.

Initially I didn't get the hype for Valheim when my friends were asking me to join them on their servers but eventually things just clicked and I find that it has a very explorative, almost skyrim-like quality to it with co-op added to it. It takes a lot of annoying parts of survival games and makes it a lot more accessible and focuses primarily on co-oping and exploring with friends. Instead of worrying about being attacked by griefing players when you're offline, now you defend your base from NPC enemies while trying to expand it and explore this large world by land or sea and craft better gear, unlocking better settlement options and fighting gigantic enemy bosses.

I spent most of tonight with one friend and my simple, "Hey, we need some more Core Wood for our settlement" comment ended up being a long, grand adventure where we were shuffling along one ratty, wooden resource cart and literally forging a path deeper into a black forest by flattening the forest ground (so the cart wouldn't take damage from bumps and rocks), breaking apart boulders, chopping down trees in our way, building shoddy temporary shelters (to repair gear, cook raw meat, hide from thunder storms) and protecting the cart from enemy creatures and monsters. Along the way, we stumbled across and slayed a giant troll, built a ramshackle giant wooden bridge to cross a big river and hunt local wildlife when we ran out of food. I also had to defend the cart from seemingly endless hordes of monsters when my friend accidentally (and hilariously) died by having a tree fall on her and she had to run all the way back to me.

All to get one specific type of crappy wood resource for our settlement. And I had an absolute blast.

There's also dungeon exploring, riding on a longship with a full crew of friends to explore uncharted areas (which is always a fun experience), epic boss fights, as well as working together (or separately) to build up a settlement. I'm sure the devs will add more but at the moment there's a ton of content to find within this early access title.

Deep Rock Galactic and Satisfactory are amazing games that are right up my alley. This one though - am I not seeing something? It looks like *every* single survival game ever made. I guess the true test will be trying it out for myself, but I don't know when that will be.

PUBG was a phenomenal game when it came out of EA with friends (3-4 years ago), just riddled with bugs, maybe that was part of its charm at times. The problem is it just didn't evolve further than some bug fixes and a few new features. It's on an outdated engine with mediocre devs. It's still the best BR there is IMO, by far the most realistic with all out all the sliding, parachuting, laser guns with zero recoil, mini map watching spam fest that is all the other BRs.

To call it a cash grab is absurd, it was only $30 3+ years ago and I put 100s of hours into it with friends.

Those observations are from people who were familiar with PUBG in the launch year and just assumed it stayed that way.
Truth is PUBG is one of the most updated maintained BRs out there.
Sure lots of people are still unhappy with it, it still has bugs, it's on an engine tons of people don't like and has a clunky feel (that actually part of the charm) but as you identified the sliding, high speed bullet sponge BR players would hate.
But to claim the game launched and then they did nothing with it... is crazy ahistorical.

Just looking at the maps alone... They released 6 more maps over the past 5 years, for a total of 7... and also remaster/rehauled 3 of those maps, for essentially 9 map releases post launch.
Obviously they added a ton of new guns, attachments, and various other items. New vehicles, new game modes, custom games. And all of this in multiple rounds of big updates over the years.
Netcode rehauls, sound effect rehauls, and although still buggy... tons of bug fixes.
They also released on consoles and mobile during this time.

Played it for a few hours after some friends wouldn't stop pokin' at me to join them.

It's.. ok. It doesn't hook me like some other games. It's pretty, and I'm fine with the low-poly character/NPC models. The environment is gorgeous. I'm sure if they add more engaging things, I'll probably be more into it. Just not as it is. There's a wealth of potential to the game.

But as another friend said, it's just Viking Rust. I never played Rust, as I don't really go for that type of multiplayer interaction.
I've had more fun in Eco, even though that is grindy as all hell, even with a few other players.

I thought PUBG had a certain freshness and intensity to it in the beginning, with just good enough execution. It didn't feel too much like a cash grab to me. But like most games that got super popular super fast, the success was squandered and it turned into a cash grab.

I expect a better outcome with Valheim. I've played a bunch of survival games and Valheim is a cut above the rest in almost every way. Great execution with a great vibe and just plain fun. The tree chopping alone was worth the $20 for me. They took what is normally a pretty tedious and sometimes annoying task and gave it just the right amount of depth and fun. I never thought chopping down trees in a survival game could be so addictive.

You can add DayZ to that pile of 'Had a great idea, took off, made money, then never went anywhere with the extra development budget'

(In DayZ thought, they shortly announced a updated standalone version that people brought into that is still, about 7 years later in a very early state. - I have not tried it in a year so could be wrong)

DayZ is actually in a good place right now. The new patches and maps (Livonia and especially the 3rd party map Namalsk) has added a lot of new players. I've ran into two people in the last week while playing that both had just bought their first PCs just to play DayZ. It's 23rd on the list of top current players at the moment on Steam. If you haven't tried it in awhile I think it's worth a look.

Yeah, now hopefully they will take better advantage of the popularity than PUBG did, they didn't do much except tiny changes with it for so long.

I hope so too, though PUBG seemed a little like a cash grab from the beginning. At least Valheim has objectives and a little semblance of world building to work with.
I really have no idea of how much a publisher helps in ensuring development continues to move forward in a positive light, but Coffee Stain studios publishes
good stuff like Satisfactory, Deep Rock Galactic etc.

yeah, like adding a graphical update would be nice. Not asking for over the top graphics, but something a little less primative would be nice.
