Diablo II: Resurrected Announced

Blizzard Entertainment announces Diablo II: Resurrected, confirming very long-running rumors that a remake of the classic action/RPG Diablo II is in the works. Word is: "Diablo II: Resurrected faithfully remasters Diablo II and its award-winning expansion with hauntingly detailed high-res 3D visuals and Dolby 7.1 surround sound, while preserving its timeless gameplay." This will include remade versions of all 27 minutes of the game's memorable cinematic cutscenes. There will also be an option to play this in throwback 2D sprite-based mode for an experience that's even closer to the original. This is coming to PC and consoles this year, and they are accepting signups for an upcoming technical test on diablo2.com (though the site isn't live as of this moment). Here's word:
Diablo® II, one of the most acclaimed titles in PC gaming history, returns . . . and Hell has never looked better. Blizzard Entertainment today revealed Diablo II: Resurrected™, the definitive remastering of Diablo II and its Lord of Destruction® expansion—two hallmark entries in the company’s genre-defining action role-playing series.

Diablo II was hailed by Time magazine as “arguably the best role-playing game of all time, the best dungeon-crawler of all time and the best PC game of all time.”* Diablo II: Resurrected welcomes back veteran heroes and invites a new generation of players to experience the game’s sinfully dark storyline, thrilling loot chase, and visceral hack-and-slash gameplay with modernized visuals that take advantage of the latest gaming hardware.

Diablo II: Resurrected takes the 2D sprite-based classic and brings it into the present with full 3D physically-based rendering, dynamic lighting, revamped animations and spell effects—all stunningly delivered in up to 4K resolution.† All 27 minutes of the game’s classic cinematics, chronicling the journey of the mysterious Dark Wanderer, are being remade—shot for shot—from the ground up. The nightmarish sounds of Sanctuary and its memorable soundtrack have also been reinvigorated to support Dolby 7.1 surround sound. By leveling up the game’s audio and visual capabilities, Diablo II: Resurrected will showcase the depth of gameplay and hallmark designs that continue to entertain players around the world to this day.

Rather unrelated but I'd like to see the same treatment done for Civilization II. There are many out there who still play it rather than the sequels, but playing it has become a technically complicated these days.

I'm getting major deja vu from this thread and the past couple Diablo 4 threads, from the threads prior to Diablo 3's release.

At this rate we're going to run out of pairs of rose colored glasses!

I remember lugging big, heavy ass, computers to friends houses to LAN Diablo 2 well into the AMs, Lord of Destruction upped the ante with 800x600 resolution and it made a huge difference. A remake is just not even interesting to me since the market is flooded with Diablo clones, I played a lot of Diablo 3 but it just felt very shallow. Grim Dawn is a good Diablo clone though! Plus, Blizz just can't seem to do anything right... even the new UI for Battle.net. They are terrible.

The 3D doesn't look great, I haven't played Path of Exile for a long time but this reminds me of that more than D2. Though judging by some of the PoE videos I've seen of recent content it doesn't even look up the that standard.

Supposedly they'll have a 2D option they don't seem as eager to show off, higher resolution textures in D2 would be welcome but the old D2 works fine and looks pretty decent in higher resolutions so long as you don't go too high making things rather small on screen.

I don't know, even if this turns out decent I don't see it really comparing to the classic with mods like D2MultiRes/alternative, and PlugY, and BaseMod, and a Maphack. They add so many great features to the game and make it so customisable a re-release just won't be able to compete on those fronts. Then there's also the ability to mod the game yourself, some of which is pretty easy.

I feel like I should be excited for this, but even if they do a decent job of it I don't see it coaxing many away from the classic for long if at all,,,, unless we can play it on our phones...

While the WC3 remaster was a pile of shit, the Starcraft remaster was actually pretty good. I'm going to withhold judgement and avoid pre-ordering, but I have high hopes, especially after watching the 'deep dive' yesterday.

My friends and I put so many hours into D2, it's gonna be a blast cooping together in this game again. I can't wait to reprise my duel wielded flail paladin, swinging those flails so fast the games sound couldn't keep up, and tanking the shit out of the bosses.

While I do think this will be awesome and I’m sure I’ll get it on PC, I’m worried the console version will turn this into a completely mindless spamfest like it did to Diablo 3.

Will they get me again? I LOVED D2. Was my prime gaming years of life. This looks really done well from what they've shown. To that effect, it compliments what they showed of the Rogue in D4. Like the graphics color palette are near identical. That's a great thing for someone who thought D3 was way too colorful and WoWish.

I'm glad D4 is going back more so towards it roots. I remember everyone saying, oh well during D1 and D2 days with the sprites, they had to look like that and it couldn't be full of colors that D3 could present with 3D. Well, no. As you can see, D4 is doing it correct with 3D, greyish/dark colors and looking medieval gothic as f**k, just how Diablo should be.

Most of what they showed of 4 looks like it could come straight out of 3 if not for some more up to date graphics, pallete wise it's nearly identical

Brah, your nuts. D3 has the color BLUE AND PURPLE IN ITS WORLDS. I don't think you ever saw those colors in D2.

D3 and D2 are night and day when it comes to their color palette. I think D4 is in the right direction to go back to D1 and D2 era. That's not a bad thing at all. Diablo was always Blizzard's mature franchise and should go back to it. If D1 and D2 were rated R, Diablo 3 was easily PG-13. Diablo 4 looks to go back to R and I'm loving it for that.

So the manly-man flag hanging behind you is a half of a rainbow? Neat.

256 color palette aside, the biggest color many here seem to have with the games of their youth is rose.

If we draw the line for "maturity" at age 12, I would agree. Otherwise, what's mature about it? It's a casual hack'n'slash clickfest, easy to navigate point&click top-down perspective, ridiculous cartoony monster names (like a guy named 'The Butcher') and the "carnage" is completely over the top exaggerated in a comical way.

The story of hopelessness, despair and corruption is pretty mature. In most fantasy stories, the good guys are always triumphant, but in the Diablo games the heroes always pay a very steep price for their victory, and they are always merely keeping the evil at bay against the odds rather than destroying it completely. Even the angels and Heaven aren't exactly "good" guys.

Literally every high level sorceress had a purple armor in D2.

Seriously, the "D2 was oh so gritty and cool" argument is lame AF. It was that way because the game ran in 256 colours, and they didn't have many spare colors for the scenery. Imho escenarios in D2 have been always fucking ugly, I agree they look somewhat cool for a 256 colour game, but they're almost monochromatic if you look closer to them. And most sprites seriously lacked definition, they where too ambitious for the tech they were working with, which was super outdated by 2001 (Baldur's Gate ran in 16bit color 3 years earlier, and ran at 30fps, not 25). We had to wait 20 years to see what the hell does Mephisto look like.

Where's the people whining all the time with "this game is all grey and brown" when we need them?

Yup. I get that this is a big undertaking that takes time and resources but the inner asshole gamer in me says: give me this shit free as a pre-order bonus for D4.

After Warcraft 3: Ref...ed, no more ActiBlizz preorders for me. I will wait for D2: Resold reviews after its release, and then I will decide. And this alone shows how the mighty Blizzard has fallen in my opinion because an updated D2 would have been a preorder for sure before the WC3 con move by ActiBlizz.
