Op Ed

  • GamesIndustry.biz - What a woman games journalist experiences in a week.
"Please take a moment to think about the facts -- with 73% of women journalists receiving online harassment, this needs to be at the forefront of discussion more often. While some may not agree with what a journalist has to say, we are humans trying to do our jobs. The world is a frustrating place and it's easy to shoot the messenger, but before tearing someone down, insulting their appearance, or threatening them with terrifying violence simply because they dared to type words on a page, think about the fact this is a real person you are alienating. An article of this nature will no longer need to be written if we take a moment to talk about our opinions without responding with direct attacks. Is wanting to be treated fairly too much to ask?"

I am sure she will stop writing about it as a journalist when it is no longer her experience as a journalist.

As a parent to two girls and a grandparent to two girls the stories they tell me about harassment, catcalling, groping on the bus, general asshattery by men is pretty strong. Luckily they are strong minded, but they shouldnt need to be. My son doesnt experience anything comparable.

The youngest girl is 12 and has stories from her bus rides to school. Thats how bad things can be and they dont live in a particularly bad place.
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

If a guy had posted that same twitter post, except he said Women: I don't want to play as a Man, Himself: Deal With it! He would have been torn to pieces, his body parts spread to the edges of the 7 kingdoms and his phallus would have been impaled in the square for all the world to scorn.

Dude. "What if you swap gender/race/orientation/religion/underwear preference? Such and such would get crucified!" is the like, most basic of basic elementary school levels of insight into these type of situations. You need to go a step further and ask yourself WHY the response would be different, if indeed it would be. There's no rulebook that everyone is following with regards to this sort of stuff, so whatever response your Tweet gets, its really just a factor of how many people it reaches and what percentage of the people it rubs the wrong way.

I'll do the legwork for you on this one. Her tweet is essentially harmless girl power crap, and isn't likely to offend any reasonable minded person. It doesn't stand out from any other boilerplate "girls are great!" type shit. But if we swap it to your example, the connotations are a lot different. Suddenly it sounds more like a creepy MRA guy or incel, because no reasonably minded male is going to say "we need more male protagonists" or "thank goodness we have a lot of good male protagonists these days!". But both are common and innocuous if you are talking about female protagonists.

In short, the reasons the responses differ is not because what was said, but because of who tends to say those things.

A self-selection survey. It's like Bad Social Science Studies 101...

Not self-selection, since they didn't just slap up an open survey. The term you're looking for is non-response bias, and it's a factor you have to consider in literally any study that gathers responses from people. There's no way to guarantee it isn't there even in the most well-crafted survey.

73% seems suspiciously low to me. The other 27% must not be on-line very much. Is there any one here who hasn't encountered verbal abuse when playing on-line?

Please take a moment to think about the facts

This AGAIN?! As has been alluded to, I'd prefer journalists do journalism. I can't suddenly make idiots not be idiots on the internet.

"That stat 73% refers to actual women journalists, not narcistic internet wannabes. And it is despicable."

Way to take a great big ol' dump on facts you don't like, without any facts, logic, nor reasoning.

"The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) conducted a global survey of over 900 women journalists last year, and the results are frightening: 73% of women journalists who responded had experienced online violence in the course of their work."

I am all for equal rights, but in today's general environment of Fuckbook nurtured hostility and after 4 years of a POTUS who's main talent was spewing infantile putdowns at anyone who crossed him, little miss Sarkeesian wanna-be needs to realize that when any person has any online presence, they are sure to get personally attacked by someone.

And this stat is a fact how? And I imagine all their male counterparts probably don't receive any less. It's a pretty thankless job. Praise the game they call you a shill, damn it and there's something wrong with you. Then again, some game sites make some stupid fucking choices sometimes that's obviously going to result in the person taking flak. Gamespot had a chick review Cy 2077 in spite of the fact that she had nothing but disdain for the genre. And the article had nothing to do with the game play per se and was simply an SJW rant about how racist and bigoted and unfair the game was. People need to be called out on dumb shit like that. Wtf did they think was going to happen?

I remember her railing specifically about the Voodoo Boys being black and how terribly racist that was - all the time her being entirely unaware that the creator of it all is a black man himself. Jesus. Rolleyes
