Star Citizen Free Fly Event

A February Free Fly event is now underway in Star Citizen, giving everyone the chance to test-fly some of the ships in CIG's perennially in-development space game. Here's what this entails:
Following the recent launch of the ‘Assault on Stanton’ Dynamic Event, developer CIG has launched a new ‘February Free Fly’ event which grants free access to download and play Star Citizen, plus free access to a wide array of ships for the duration of the event. Pilots can look forward to free test flights for the following vehicles:

  • Consolidated Outlands Mustang Alpha
  • RSI Aurora MR
  • MISC Prospector
  • MISC Freelancer
  • Anvil Arrow
  • Drake Dragonfly

New players can also take advantage of a 10% discount across a large number of Starter Packs on the Pledge Store during the Free Fly event.

Yeah, definitely not very computer savvy. Wink
Yup. I've been a PC gamer since Prince of Persia, back in the MS DOS era. It's probably nearer 20 years that I've been building computers and now I'm at the point where I'm encouraging my son to get involved in PC building - he gets all my hand-me-downs, so currently he's rocking a GTX 1080 Ti. Sure he's six and only plays Fortnite but he's got to start somewhere.

Ha, that's nothing. Back in my college days I used to ride a unicycle and even rocked a pink frilly dress I found at a car boot sale. Fortunately I don't have any pictures, so I can't inflict that upon you.

Yes, it's definitely that I'm not computer savvy and nothing to do with the pre-alpha spaghetti code. I've benchmarked my system on 3DMark and Heaven 4.0 and it performs exactly in line with expectations. I'm using nVME storage, have 32GB RAM, thermals are excellent and I have a clean Windows install with properly managed power settings.

Given that I can run Arena Commander in single player with an average of 130-140fps and 1% lows of 80-100fps it's clear that the issue isn't a poorly configured computer but engine bottlenecks. The only other game that gives my system issues is Crysis Remastered (with or without raytracing), which is also based on CryEngine. And to be clear, the issue isn't specific to my card - the performance on any RTX 3080 is poor. The frame pacing is all over the place.

I hope you're right. I like the vision and the worldbuilding. It just seems like they want to add All The Stuff instead of solidifying what they have before adding more. Did we really need real time face capture for your avatar and all the bandwidth that requires? Did we really need simulated ice cube physics? Anyway, I want this to be a thing, but at the current pace it's hard to see it finished before I lose my eyesight and my fingers deform into immobile claws due to arthritis.
Out of curiosity, when was the last time you put money into this project?

Can you explain to me what the vision is you like?

What special about the world building?

I think they've done a good job with ship design, station design, environment design, costumes, etc. That doesn't mean gameplay is going to be good, but I like the aesthetic they have for the stuff I mentioned. So I guess you could say I think the art team has done a good job.

Speaking of Crysis, that's probably one of the key issues: stretching that engine from single terrestrial levels into solar system sized ones.
It's definitely a case of CIG constantly bolting on new features to an engine and framework that cannot handle it. There's a reason CIG had to reduce the player count from 50 to 40 and remove a planet when they have the recent Xeno Threat event.

Most hardcore players love the fact that it is insanely detailed. Think flightsim mentalities taken all the way from the cockpit to the bunk to the station to the worlds. Personally, I think it's silly to bother with functional toilets on ships and having my spaghetti sauce run over each noodle in a realistic fashion.....and that sort of OCD granular feature creep is what has the highest probability of killing the project long term.

What special about the world building?
It is very detailed and unique....which is somewhat new for space sims. Each station or city feels very unique. You can recognize where you are just by the flavor of the city. Each ship manufacturer has a similar aesthetic from the feel of the cabin to the audio prompts from the flight systems. I don't know much about the 'lore'....but I can only imagine it has a similarly opulent budget for development.

It's an interesting experiment overall. I'm curious to see how long it lasts....and I'll enjoy it a few times a year until it crashes and burns.

....do you run around the room waving your arms and screeching when typing hyperbole like this? LOL. To enter the game, you have to have a ship. Missions/Economy are like any other MMO....there is low level content and there is higher level content. It is/will be significantly more smooth entering SC as a noob than it would be something like Eve or even some advancement shooters like Battlefront.

RSI doesn't need lies and bullshit to make it clear that their game and dev model is an utter moneysink shitshow....that's all obvious just from the actual facts. And this coming from someone that just bought a new ship last year....because the time to money ratio isn't bad since I enjoy tinkering around and flying with friends.

Hehe. The game is definitely CPU bound but when according to CIG's own Telemetry page even a 10900F (10-core, 20 thread @ 5.2GHz) with an RTX 3080 can only average 47.5fps at 1080p, I'm not in a rush to upgrade from my 8700K @ 5GHz. I can actually run Star Citizen at 130-140fps in singleplayer, so it's definitely poor optimisation of the Persistent Universe.

All other games run great and I figure I might as well hold out for the Ryzen 6000 series with DDR5, USB 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 to give me a better upgrade path.

Lucky for them they have about 10 more years before release. So graphic card perf should double by then.

Naw, Chris always piles ever more feature creep that keeps the game perpetually beyond any PC performance increases.
