Anthem's Future on the Line: Report

An article on Bloomberg reports that a meeting will take place at Electronic Arts later this week to determine the fate of Anthem, BioWare's online action/RPG that had such a disappointing launch. This is unconfirmed, as EA told them they do not comment on rumor and speculation. But Bloomberg's Jason Schreier says three people "familiar with the matter" tell him that the company will soon decide whether progress on the "Anthem Next" project to revamp the game will continue, or if they're just going to cut their losses:
This week, EA executives will review the latest version of Anthem Next and decide whether to expand the team or abandon the project, said the people, who asked not to be named discussing private information. The Anthem Next team includes about 30 people, BioWare said last year. People familiar with the project said it will need to expand to at least triple that in order to produce new content and continue attempting to overhaul the game. EA has not yet indicated whether it’s willing to commit that kind of budget to revive a maligned game.

The gfx/combat/flying wasn't generic, far from it. What is more generic in feel to me is a game that sold a million last week. Not that it can't be good, but most of these indy survival games have that generic feeling. Like if the tool they bought to plugin doesn't do it, you won't get it.

Here's the weird thing.. I hate survival games but I like Valheim... I don't like Rust/Ark/DayZ/Insert every other one.

BUT... I'm loving valheim.. Not entirely sure why but it's weirdly fun.

as for the topic on hand...

I watched from afar of Anthem and thought "This game looks like it'll be shit" and it was... It'll be gone.

It's a combination of graphics (that are both ugly and pretty at the same time somehow) and simplicity/minimalism. If you really want to know why you like this game and hate the others, the best game to compare it with is Conan Exiles, I think. That game has beautiful graphics through and through but hits you with a gazillion crafting crap right off the bat. Oh, and it can't shut up about hunger and thirst and heat and cold and bleghhh.....

It doesn't matter how good it looks or how it runs IF THE GAMEPLAY IS SHIT!

I had to shout that, sorry about that. I tend to forget that stupidity doesn't mean hard of hearing.

Good job Beamer, now find a post that I didn't say that I like Anthem. Awww shit, you can probably can, and that would be Satire... But I have and will always maintain that Fallout 76, CP2077, and Anthem are bad ass. Also my computer is only like $8500 it's just in Intel 7960X, 64 gigs ram and dual 2080Ti, it's like two years old now and I need an upgrade..

All they needed to do was continue to support it like other GaaS's and work on the weak points, end game gear progression. Simply more content.

Yeah, but that's millions of dollars, and I doubt they are making that money to justify the cost.

Valheim is Minecraft meets action-RPG with Viking aesthetics. No generic indie survival game sells a million in a week. Even good ones like Subnautica don't usually do that.

Looks like survival Outward to me. Still seems pretty common overall, a little improvement with baddies.

I honestly don't understand what it was people were excited by in the pre-release trailers. It looked completely generic.

As it stands, I expect EA will pull the plug. The game never garnered the reception EA wanted and it's going to be an uphill struggle to turn it around.

Did you read the development expose on this game? It sounds like they had a great concept, but almost no planning and vision beyond that.

I think you can also look at it the other way. Ok you have the game, now where is the continued services? They talk about the time it needs to add things now and will it be worth it? Well shit if you would have supported it like a GaaS is supposed to be supported post launch you would have had those things in by now. The whole thing from A to Z was mismanaged. The characters are the only thing they got right, the only thing.
