Tencent Firings and Blacklistings Over Corruption

Tech giant Tencent announces they've fired over 100 staff and blacklisted 37 companies for involvement in bribery and embezzlement incidents, apparently spurred by an anti-corruption drive spearheaded by the Chinese government (thanks RedEye9). Here's word:
Tencent Holdings Ltd on Wednesday named 37 companies it had blacklisted from future contracts and said it has fired more than 100 staff over embezzlement and bribery incidents.

Tencent, China’s biggest social media and video games company, said in a social media post that it had reported 40 employees to authorities since it started an anti-graft campaign in the fourth quarter of 2019.

In one case, an employee in its game publishing division sought benefits for outside parties and obtained kickbacks from them, Tencent said in the name and shame post.

Yes, but not at equal levels. Some countries have a deep and long standing culture of corruption as a way of life. It infects all levels of society and the government. It's accepted as a way of life in that society. Other countries have a long standing culture of the rule of law. You get corrupt individuals, but for the most part, the government works hard to prosecute corruption when it occurs, and society resists it strongly. Don't fall into the fallacy of "all sides do it!"

Do you suppose God shares that viewpoint? Even more so, do you think he cannot see the rampant corruption in every nation and government? There's no such thing as more corruption is eviler, and less corruption is less evil. Corruption is corruption. "Lesser, greater, middling… Makes no difference."

I think that He does share that viewpoint. And there is greater and lesser corruption. There's a vast difference between America, which while flawed, it trying to progress towards a better future for all with greater equality, inclusiveness, compassion, etc. and someplace like China, where systematic rape against a subset of their population is government policy. In America we have corrupt individuals, and we fight against them. In China, corruption is government policy. That's a vast difference.

Bingo!

However in the U.S. bribery no longer exists, thanks to Citizen's United, it is legal and considered free speech.

Of course there is corruption in the west but the PRC is on a whole different level, Corruption is mostly tolerated and anti corruption laws are only enforced during these purges when they want to get rid of political rivals or people who are disloyal.
This is just a part of Xi continuing to solidify his position as dictator for life.

It's not usually a "bribing the right people" thing in China, but party orthodoxy. There's a purge going on of anyone who ever said anything bad about Jinping Xi, and no amount of bribes will shield someone from that. My understanding is that bribery is how things get done, but it doesn't necessarily drive the politics of the day. Just like in the old USSR, high ranking officials can still take big falls.

It is, but you only get to bribe the government. It brokers no competition.

It's how it's done around most of the world and we're not immune to it either. Most government contracts are based on it. God only knows how many 10s of billions of tax dollars has been given away with zero oversight since this nightmare started.

China is super paranoid about stuff like this because of how high up the US had managed to get people in their country due to bribery. Chances are execs at Tencent saw what happened with Alibaba and found some people to throw under the bus like a good loyal company would do.
