Distant Worlds 2 Announced

Slitherine announces Distant Worlds 2, a 4X strategy sequel set in space, where no one can hear you explain that all the Xs in 4X actually start with "e." It's been 10 years since the release of the first Distant Worlds game, and the new installment promises 3D graphics, a 64-bit engine, and a state-of-the-art interface. An Ackdarians Trailer features a look, and the game's Steam Listing says this is coming soon. Here's a bit:
Distant Worlds 2 is a vast, pausable real-time 4X space strategy game. Experience the full depth and detail of turn-based strategy, but with the simplicity and ease of real-time, and on the scale of a massively-multiplayer online game. The Universe is Yours!

Huge galaxies with up to 2,000 star systems and tens of thousands of planets, moons, and asteroids are yours to explore and exploit, whether peacefully through mining and diplomacy or by conquest! Well, I have the game, but could never really get into it. My main problem with the game was you needed ships to protect yourself yet they got expensive to maintain and once you built enough ships your economy would tank.

Distant Worlds is the first 4X game to really grab and hold my attention. I have tried most of the big 4X titles and rarely get past the first 15 minutes of terrible UI, menu diving, and wonky map systems.

So I was soured on 4X space games, but then I saw the box art for DW featuring what looked like the "Giga Shadow" from Lexx and I knew I had to try it.

Thankfully, I 'got' how DW worked almost instantly and played the hell out of it. The enhanced mod and GUI mod made it even better.

Looking forward to this, I just hope they stay true to the original organization and GUI.

The main issue was that the game had a lot of systems and it was very very obtuse to find information. Honestly CK3 showed how you can take a 'complicated' thing like CK2 and make it accessible via very good onboarding (note I said 'complicated' not 'complex' because CK2's problems was the UI was unnecessarily 'complicated' not that the underlying systems were complex cuz they weren't)

DW2 streamlined the interface. I just watched the combat video, looks 100x better than DW1. It's all 3d now so lots of visual issues with the 2d plane have been eliminated.

If anyone is curious why Distant Worlds is better than Stellaris or Galactic Civilizations, this is why...

- Game engine is fluid, you can zoom into a planet and all the way out to the universe view in one motion, nothing immersion breaking
- Fuel is how you travel... it limits you and it empowers you. The only thing that restricts your travel is lack of fuel, you don't travel on rails.
- Ship design is meaningful. It's not visually meaningful, it's meaningful in the sense that you need to balance the right components and cost to map with your tech and resource limitations`.
- There are tons of resources that are needed to build various techs, so there's incentive to acquire those resources and protect them. It's an incredible resource management simulator.
- anyone can fly into your sphere of influence, but it's up to you to monitor them, invoke sanctions or create blockades for habitual offenders.
- Universe scope is massive and highly customizable
- incredible depth in automation for when things get too large to micro manage
- capturing rare resources and protecting them is one of the most fun aspects of the game
- AI mods made the AI very crafty and fun to play against

Distant Worlds: Universe is my all time favorite game. I put in an absurd amount of hours into it and it never got stale. DW2 looks like everything DW1 was, but better. Couldn't be any more excited for this.
