Out of the Blue

I feel like I have a new phone, even though it's the same Galaxy S9 I've had for nearly three years. That's because I finally decided to dare the fates and take it out of its case. This is something I contemplated close to a year ago when I visited my brother and noticed how sleek his iPhone seemed without a case. That was until a few hours later when he dropped it, and the screen cracked. D'oh! But I took the already slim case off the other day to clean it, and was amazed at how much smaller and cooler the phone felt. So considering its age, how I don't actually drop it, and I actually pay for insurance, I decided I would go for it. What do you think, am I being reckless, or do a lot of you go commando as well?

Slim Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

I have an S9, I only take it out of the case when I need to access the sprunger to open the memory card port on a phone, or when showing it off to other people when asked 'what's that phone?'. My wife has an iPhone and had hers out of the case while on vacation, leaning WAY over the edge of a walkway above a beach to get a picture of a couple exchanging their vows (no one we knew, just randoms). Sure enough she dropped the phone, it fell 20 feet onto the only concrete nearby and shattered the face. She got the picture though, it wasn't worth the inconvenience and repair cost but made an already memorable day more so.

I gave one of my grandkids my note 3, it had never left a case in its life and had a glass screen protector, it had been dropped a number of times in its case. It was pristine 5 years later (just a couple of battery changes), that lasted all of one week when they took it out of its case, now it has a huge crack in the case and a fracture in the screen. a pity as it was a good phone (and had GPS joystick for pokemon go, hence why the grandkid wanted it)

Loving Wandavision. I like the different approach and I like how well they are playing things. Very creative and very bold given that the standard superhero formula probably would have been well received.

I do think that it might play better to older audiences just because of how each episode is basically a decade of TV being represented....and the first few episodes go pretty far back in the old TV time machine. I Love Lucy, Bewitched, etc etc. My adult children know of these shows but all of them are fairly sure they have never seen them. Makes the references and the jokes fall a little flatter with them I am sure. I also love the cast. The neighbor, played by Kathryn Hahn, is stealing every scene she is in.

so what's the show actually about? can't just be a 70s sitcom about avengers can it?

You ever see that '90s movie where Tobey Maguire uses a magic remote control to enter the world of his favorite B&W sitcom? The homage to classic TV is a facade, and there comes a point where it crumbles away.

interesting. Pleasantville, a hugely underrated movie; one of my top 10 of all time. i'll wait till WV finishes the season to see if its worth resubbing to D+

Widespread use of coronavirus face masks can help control virus transmission: study.

Yup, we've known that since like May/June. And many nations have proven it. It's just convincing selfish fucking Americans to consider someone other than themselves and their "freedoms" that has proven so difficult.

I have to say Wandavision is a strange series, but it is also strangely attractive with its Leave It To Beaver aesthetic. The black and white color looks like authentic 1950s black and white, like they produced it in the 1950s, threw it in the Disney vault, and released it in December last year this month. The biggest draw for me is Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, both reprising their roles as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch and Vision. They are excellent actors, and it's fun to watch them embody their characters inside this unusual black and white world. It is also the first series in the MCU Phase Four. There's an overarching story, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it unfolds.

So far, I give the series a thumbs up!

I take it back! Wandavision is like a cross between The Twilight Zone and Truman Show. So strange!

Biggest yawn fest of 2021 so far. It's the MCU, you go in expecting scifi action and decent FX.

You get horrible jokes, cringey campy ( as opposed to good campy ) acting, boring 50's looking sitcom empty shell of an american pie B-serie.

ZERO out of 10 AFAIC.

Cases - IMO, just get a cheaper phone or the insurance, and go for it.

Had smart phones from the Sidekick all the way through to Pixel 4a, with no case and no broken screens. I just don't drop them very much. my SO, on the other hand, drops them frequently. The last one had a cracked screen in less than 3 days (waiting for the case). YMMV, of course, but with 3 years of unclaimed insurance, haven't you paid for a new one already?

Live a little, man. You've been punished enough dragging that big ugly thing around. Trust yourself; it'll be great.

I've had four iPhones (3GS, 4S, SE, SE 2), and only had a case on the 3GS. I have dropped the others occasionally, but have always been able to get a foot under the phone before it hit the ground, so I've only ever gotten corner dings and minor screen scratches. The SE2's glass back makes it slide all over the place if you don't put it on a level surface, though, so I am thinking about getting a thin case/wrap, or maybe a couple strips of electrical tape just to add some friction :)

Damn, really frustrated about The Expanse. I hate having to spend so much time watching, either naomi or marco.

On the bright side I can just skip all their scenes on rewatch, since knowing how the tv series handled it.
I blame the book differences and how the actors started out decent but went down starting with season 3.

Agreed. I'm sick to death of watching this stupid, and utterly useless, side story about her and her fucking son. And her constant whining and crying is beyond annoying, enough already! Spoiler....

I hope the ship she's on fucking blows up already. Is this bullshit in the books?
