Steam 2020 Year in Review

Valve offers a Steam 2020 Year in Review Report. They look back at last year on the service in words and pictures, offering all sorts of statistics. Here's a bit:
As many of you already know, this past year had more than its share of challenges, with everyone's lives upended by the global pandemic. While Steam was already seeing significant growth in 2020 before COVID-19 lockdowns, video game playtime surged when people started staying home, dramatically increasing the number of customers buying and playing games, and hopefully bringing some joy to counter-balance some of the craziness that was 2020. This has led to new highs for monthly active users (120.4 million), daily active users (62.6 million), peak concurrent users (24.8 million), first-time purchasers (2.6 million per month), hours of playtime (31.3 billion hours), and the number of games purchased (21.4% increase over 2019).

I think it's pretty telling that EA came back to Steam after dumping a few hundred million into Origin.

I have nothing against the EGS, it's just a really lackluster client by comparison. I get free games on there and never play them, its become a game unto itself. I've noticed many developers say DLC sales are abysmal on the platform and that many hold back DLC after their exclusivity period passes for the Steam release. I wonder how many devs will bother with exclusivity when they aren't being paid for it, probably none I would imagine. I think it's really hard to hit that feature/integration level that Steam has, its really robust and well done. Every time I play a multiplayer game on EGS I end up thinking how much better it would be with Steam instead.

But I'm glad for competition and all that. Good to keep Valve honest.

With stats like that, why any publisher would choose to go exclusive on EGS and|or their proprietary launcher is beyond me. The goal is to reach as many consumers as possible, and right now, on PC, Steam is the only platform with that reach. 120 million monthly active users is bonkers. That's more than Playstation (~103m), Xbox Live (~90m), and Epic Games Store (~61m).
